apparently i was given the belt start type... does the belt just stay there after its running?

No idea. The belt starters went out quite a few years ago. I'd suggest changing over to the shaft starter.

If I remember correctly you stuff one end of the belt between the frames and the other "clips" to a little thingy on the fan shroud. One of the guys at our club has one.
It's not a big deal to switch over to shaft start, but you'll need a new clutch with the one-way shaft in it.
