View Full Version : Why do I have to run 127 on tail gain?

OK.. I have a soft tail.. on two identical helis... one with mini-v and one with vbar. 10.5mm ball distance.. Align 650 servos.

So I decide to finally make it solid.. I dial up the tail gain.. no wag.. dial it up more.. no wag.. I never got wag!.. in fact I am peaked now at the MAX of 127 and finally the tail is holding nicely..

But why so high? Why don't I get a wag?

Meaning what? I am using the ball distance of 10.5mm on the Align 650. Should I put the ball further away? Or closer? Or just leave it alone and stay with the gain at 127 since they the tails are working well now.

You can leave it, or move further out

Further out = higher mechanical gain

OK. Maybe I move out one notch to give me a bit of headroom... I'd like to be able to induce wag and go just down from there and show up somewhere on the slider.

of course... all my tweaking is probably going to go out the door once v5 comes out..

Sly, Try a backwards inverted huricane and see what the tail does. That is the only way I can test my tail to get the true gain value. Just hovering it will get you a higher gain than you need.

+1 That's usually how i set my gain as well.... or during huge high speed funnels..

Slyster, the whole mechanical gain thing slipped my mind yesterday. You can always count on MrMel for the answer; awesome!

I'm running 10.5mm on my 500 so I would think you could run at least another 2-4mm out on the 550 and be good. We have the same servo and your slider has to travel further than mine. Isn't it like 45ish degrees from center in either direction you want the servo to move??

I think I remember somewhere reading 600 size was using 14-15 mm distance?

Thanks to RadDuke who helped me out at the field today.. we moved the ball distance out 1 hole... and set the tail up again.. now down to 100 gain.. and it's the best I've ever felt it. No wag even on pitch pumps.. just beautiful. Wonder if I should go out one more hole to get my gain down another 20-30 notches.

I did the same on my 500. I was really ticked that I maxed out my gain and felt robbed.

Just be aware that moving out from the centre will reduce the overall torque that can be applied by the servo so IMO I would keep it as close to the centre as possible while at the same time allowing you enough [+ a bit extra] gain to play with.

Sounds like you now have it pretty much spot on as it is.

You could try... but the twins fly so nice now! If you go too far out, you lose resolution also so it may actually cause a wag or kick. IMHO, leave as is and fly it like ya stole it! :thumbup:

P.S. Thanks for letting me fly...Now I want a 550!
