Chasing down a high-freq. vibration issue. Just wondering what everyone's final needle settings are on this motor?
Set-up:
700LE, OS91HZR, Hatori SB20FH2, multi-gov, x4 610's , x1 650, AR7100. Quark
every thing has been balanced using a dial indicator and dubro balancer.
I'm in NW Florida, with the heat index, it's around 110F here. The heli is set up identical to my other 700N with the OS91HZ motor (no tail shake issues on that heli)
Yesterday, on a test flight the motor was running smoothly, fuel in the tank was like glass, BUT, the tail twitch was still there. Today, without changing anything the fuel is shaking quite a bit. Tail twitch is identical.
Everything has been balanced. I took the tail off of my other nitro, no change. I've checked everything from the boom supports to the head. THIS HELI IS BRAND NEW.
I know the Quark works perfectly, I had it on a 700 for 5 flights before I put it on this new build.
I'm about to throw in the towel on this one. Just doesn't make any sense.

Sounds rich (would be the mid needle at hover like that).
My HZ-R settings:
Roughly 700 above sea level
I run both shims in the head
Cool power 30%
Hatori SB-20
OS #8 glow-plug
Mid needle is 1/2 turn open from fully closed
High needle is 1 1/4 turn open from fully closed
I am still a little rich on the high end, but I leave it alone as the motor is happy at those settings, and I would rather be a little rich than trying to squeeze every last ounce of power out of it (I have to pay for my replacement parts LOL!)
Use these settings with a grain of salt. Every motor is different. It has been pretty humid here lately (Indianapolis, IN). But I usually dont have to vary my needles more than a few clicks rich or lean. Motor is VERY consistent - that is what I love about my OS motors.
Have you messed with the gyro mounting? Different tape? Strap? Mass dampening plate?
Good luck. I am exceptionally pleased with my HZ-R. Very consistent, very powerful. It is literally fuel and fly for me, I rarely touch the needles. Best motor I have ever owned.

1/2 turn open on Mid ?? Wow.. I run the OS 91 hz pumped and it is about 1 1/2 turns open as well as the High end being around 1 1/4 as you..

I've got the mid at a couple of clicks under one full turn out and the high end at 1-1/4 out also using the multigov pro including the fuel mixture and it doesn't change much.
150 meters ASL average temps at the moment 12 degrees celcius.
Its a pig to start cold though!

I'm at sea level and both of my 700's are at about 2 on mid and 1 1/2 one low end.
when the weather cools down they will get shifted to 1 1/2 on mid and 1 1/4 on low end.
High humidity here in the south seems to really affect my helis.
When I land and get a temp gun to it it is right at 195f and they run fine for me.

+1 on these settings for me - almost identical. 1/2 turn open from fully closed is correct for the mid needle for the HZ-R. I had Bert Kammerer look at mine a few weeks ago and thats exactly where he set it. I seriously think your mid may be so rich that it's causing the tail to twitch, but you'll have to respond with your settings.
I had a similar situation that was resolved by strapping down the gyro, but putting a slab of zeal tape *on top* of the gyro to protect it from vibes transferring from the strap.
BTW, you must have some seriously laid back neighbors to let you get away with hovering a 700 in your front yard.

I have my needles set @ 3/4 on the mid, 1-3/4 on the high. It's making great power now, transitions well and is running cool. On a friends recommendation, I started by richening up the idle screw about 5 degrees first off. Now it purrrs pretty well.
The tail twitch isn't the motor. I took the motor out of my other 700N and installed it, tail twitch is still there.
I either have a bad Quark or a bad tail servo (ds650) I used the quark on a 700E before I moved it over to this one, it worked well on that bird, At least I think it did. I'm running out of options here.

I have the same issue. Mark, did you resolve you tail twitch?

May sound silly but is your glow plug tight? My 91HZ-R spit mine out one day:badair:

Replace the bearings in the clutch block(4).
Mine did the same thing and I swapped out every electronic thing I could, clutch, head, you name it. Replaced the bearings and it was gone. It has nothing to do with the motor.
If you are not using the metal clutch block, get it.

Engine settings are not transferable, we have pipes, fuel, glow plugs, altitude, humidity, etc.
Posting needle settings is pointless, some guy is going to use your settings and burn up his motor and then gripe about it the next day. Tuning a motor takes practice, understand how the heli acts at different tunes and what it sounds like.

How are you guys setting the low end. I can't seem to turn it. Do you have to remove the cline regulator to loosen the black nut?

I had the same issue at first. After tuning the motor and ~3 gal's of fuel it went away. It takes a dozen flights or so to brake everything in.
