View Full Version : New advertisement for OS
"Power means nothing without reliability, we give you neither"
Or
"OS 91 C-Spec. It may have bearings from a 1960's set of rollerskates, but at least it won't run right."
I really dispise my OS. It has never ran well from the beginnig. It had a bad bearing right out of the box, and Heliproz and Hobby Services, only offered to rebuild it, and not exchange it. It ran ok, not spectacular, or satisfactorily for a couple of gallons, and now that it isn't even broke in fully, is eating glow plugs about every third flight, and won't run worth a hoot.
I would trade this engine to some one for a roll of used toilet paper, but they would be getting a bad deal, because at least the toilet paper has served it's purpose.
I am very disgusted, and I will never buy OS again. I would be happier with a cox .049 in my vigor.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Buy a YS and you'll be happy.
but I would check the crack case before running the engine I got from heliproz and it had rust spots on the crank I ran mine for about 6gals and the rear bearing went out. I put a set of High speed boca's in it.
Differece is the cost of the YS vs OS..

Ivan,
If your disappointed and disgusted with the OS. You can send it to me. I will be glad to take it. I will send you a fresh roll of toliet paper for it. I don't have a problem getting the OS Cspec to run.
David
So David you are a practitioner of the dark arts? LOL
I know they can run, I have seen them, and they are strong, but I am really frustrated with mine. In the mean time I have torn it down and there is no FOD or detonation evidence in the cylinder, so I am at a loss of why it is eating glowplugs. The top of the piston is a light brown color, and this engine has never been run lean, never. I gues it is time to check the bearings again, although they feel quite smooth. The vigor clutch is a real pain to get off the crank, it is almost a permanent fixture. I don't know how they fiugred it out to make it lock so tight, but it is on there.
As for the toilet paper, I could still use donations, because I have an eight person family with four being girls, and three quite young. I swear they use toilet paper for everything. Need the lawnmower fixed? Try toiletpaper! Need someting to hold your curtains in place? Those pesky mosquitos getting to you?
etc. etc. etc.

An update on mine....
Maybe the thing is breaking in (after 5 gallons) or maybe it was the 85 degree weather.. Two days ago, mine was rockin.. It ran cool and made great power.. I don't think it likes 95 degree temps in the Fury.. Anyway The needles are a little weird.. The very bottom end idle is still a little too lean for my taste, but workable.. The low end is about an eighth of a turn out from full open and the high end is three fourths!!!?? of a turn from closed!!! I ran it several times the other day with these settings and checked the temp regularly and it was fine.. I am running a .004 shim on the head and coolpower 30%.. Normally I run Magnum, but some one gave me a couple of cases of coolpower... The coolpower runs a full quarter turn leaner that the magnum on the main needle to get the same power/ temp.. I.e. the magnum runs at one turn out on the main..
I have pondered that I should try turning in the low needle and try to "balance" it with the high, but the idle gets too damn lean.. So, it stays where it is.. The motor sounds and feels (temp) very happy and the piston looks good, so what can I say.. :)

Add and extra .004 if your running the stock Hyper Head (gets it back to Factory .008) or if your running the Viper Head you can go as much as .024 and the needles will be less finicky. You can also add the restrictor needle or do a cateye mod (or both) and be able to close down the idle to normal 1/2 way open and it will eliminate the lean run.
If it is anything like 3 of the PS's I have, it is the midrange that is lean and you have to compensate for it by running the idle way rich like you describe. I also had to compensate for it by running the top end excessively rich to, but if your is OK at 3/4 turn sounds like you don't have that issue. All mine would be lean on the top end at 3/4, I am more like right around 1 turn. We are at 2165ft elevation and at BlackSheep, I would estimate around 700ft altitude. I also have one PS that runs GREAT right out of the box, it is in my night rig. :)
Look at our video section for the Shannon Davis Cateye mod video and you can see Shannon take one that is running just like you describe, do the cateye mod and cure the lean midrange problem right on the video. Here is the link to the cateye mod video post. http://www.helifreak.com/viewtopic.php?t=2481
As for break-in, it takes a while. Dont think it took mine 5 gallons but definitely 2 or so. Now they just keep getting better and better in the power department.
Sounds like your getting there Jeff. :) Stay with it and you will be rewarded.
