View Full Version : Bad ION mainshaft?

Finally got to start my ION build yesterday and hit a snag.
It appears I got a bad mainshaft.
It is too large a diameter for the swash or bearing blocks. Now I know they are usually tight in the blocks but the swash should slide easily.
Lets just say even a hammer wouldn't make this one work. :D
I put my Extreme shaft in and it fit perfect. Then I tried the ION mainshaft on my Extreme swash and it wouldn't fit.
So just wondering if anyone else has seen this and some FYI for you guys that may have just gotten a kit.

Chris I will call you tomorrow about this.

BTW Besides the slightly longer shaft I assume the Extreme shaft will get me by till I can pick up a new ION shaft? Just has the bit of extra where it would seat in the lower bearing block sticking out under the maingear.

Did you clean the mainshaft well before you tried to install it? The mainshafts are coated with a substance to keep them from rusting . I always take a scotch brite pad and some acetone and clean the main shaft when I take it out of the package.
If I do not clean the mainshaft before installation , the swash plate will not slide freely.

Just a thought

Scotch bright, wire wheel, grinder (yeah bad idea don't ask. :D ) Still will actually leave a score around the entire circumferance of the shaft when trying to install the swash.
It is defiantely about .5mm or so too large for the swash. It fit REALLY tight in the bearing blocks, but went in. No potato on the swash.
The Extreme shaft fits like a glove in both swashes and the bearing blocks.

Good thought though. :D

Hmmm
We will certainly swap that out for you, sorry for the inconvienience. As a way to save a little time, if you have a drill press, you can use a piece of sandpaper to remove a bit of material and allow the swash to pass over the shaft. I have done this in the past with main masts that were too tight and it seemed to work o.k. Otherwise, we will be happy to exchange it.

Just a follow up.
My new mainshaft arrived several weeks ago and it fit like a glove.
Guess MA just got a bad batch.

Thanks again Chris. Loving the ION. :D
