My son is a new pilot and thinking of giving the contest stuff a go for the 07 season. My question is, are there any class I, II, III events in our area? We live in Oklahoma and it seems most of the AMA contests are pretty far for us to drive to. How can I find out about events with in about a 12 hour drive from us?

Thanks,
Jim....

Jim,
Would you be the Jim Robertson that was in hobby back in the mid 90s?

Doing great. Good to see you got your son involved in the hobby. Look forward to seeing you an event sometime next year.
The easiest way to find out about contests is too look on the AMA calendar. The events your interesting in will be listed as 431, 432, 433. The new manuevers for the AMA classes are also listed on the AMA site. You can also see them in another thread in the contest section here.

Thanks David! I look forward to seeing you as well, along with some of the old gang. Actually my son got me reinvolved in the hobby. He decided that he wanted to learn to fly in June so here we are and I'm loveing it.

Thanks for the info and I will do as you suggest.

Jim,
Good to hear from you. There were events scheduled in Tampa FL, Birmingham AL, Chattanooga TN, and Nashville TN that I went to last year, plus the NATS. Seems most of the events are in the SE now.

Hi Gordie, good to here from you as well. Thats a bummer having those types of events so far away. Might be able to make the AL and TN ones though and of course the NATs. I look forward to seeing you guys at some events next year. We have not put our 07 schedule together yet but IRCHA is definately a must. My son is very excited to meet some of my old freinds and see some of the awesome pilot demos.

Jim,

When I decided to start competing last year...there were no contests in FL, either...

Know what I did? I got my CD license, and held my own contest, here in Tampa. With the help of a couple local and far away contest vets, I think we put on a decent little contest. Don't expect funfly-level turnout. My contest had 13 competitors...and it had the highest turnout of the season, except for the Nats. Finding club support for such a small, specialized event can be a little hard, but if they understand what you are planning, you should be ok.

I have read a few posts on the forums asking if there was a contest or two in the midwest...so don't be so sure you couldn't find enough folks to hold a contest. There's a void for contests after the Nats, so consider that as well.

Cheers,

Erich
