Does anyone have a club approach to training new heli pilots. We have recently seen an increase in interest in rc helicopters at our club in Spartanburg, SC and I was interested in whether anyone has developed a plan that they would share in getting new pilots off to a positive start. Does a trainer (or buddy) cord aid in training a new heli pilot? Any success stories to share?

You guys need to come up to Easley to BlackSheep Club Field www.bsrcc.com sometime soon, bring your helis and we can help you make sure they are setup right and meet and greet.

Buddy Cord... My personal opinion is that they are much better suited for learning really advanced stuff if for anything at all. A large safe area and training gear and someone to help is what I recommend, but only after your helis are checked out by experienced flyers to make sure they are safe and setup well, and also to sheck your radio programming. Are you the guy who bought my Raptor? Is he in your club?

Thanks for posting. I will talke to some people and see if we can arrange something soon!!

You guys also should really come to the BlackSheep Event Sept 17-19!! It would be WELL WORTH the short drive. There will be plenty of people to help you guys there and check out your machines. :)

Thanks for the response.
We have plans to be at the Black Sheep fun fly and have visited the field recently (missed our connection with the heli crowd). One of our members did connect with HC about setups and that has helped re-assure us that we are on the right course. I attended last year as a spectator and was surprised to see what an rc heli could fly. It will be good to put faces with the names on the message board and will look forward to Sept. 17-19th. Maybe this year I might even take the heli out of the truck!

Excellent. See you there. I will get with the guys and see if we can do a clinic or something. How many of you guys will be coming that could use someone to help you with your setups?

William,
I know of 10 currently involved at different levels of flying skills and maybe 2 more that are interested but, I don't know everyone's schedules and what days they may attend the Black Sheep fun fly. Many may elect to remain spectators and some fly when schedules permit. If someone arrives at the fun fly as a newbee, is there a safe zone designated for the beginner. I don't recall seeing anyone last year (at my meager skill level) out there flying. Of course, I spent alot of my time in shock at what I was seeing!

We could probably get a heli clinic together at some time when events did not conflict. I am sure some of the guys would certainly volunteer for a half day clinic with a half day of flying. Throw in some lunch and drinks and you have a mini-heli invasion.......................Pretty easy.................

Borrow or buy a simulator and get a lot of stick time.... it will save you many dollars in parts !!!

I have also thought it would be nice for a club to have one or two sims that it could loan out to new members who want to learn to fly heli's. In my opinion, the sim is the greatest thing made for learning to fly heli's without the frustration of lost money, heli's and time.

None for the trailer ball either Jesse. :)

This Invasion unfortunately looks to be conditional on weather with the MAJOR hurricane bearing down on us. :DOH
