Hello,
I'm new to the list and have enjoyed reading about the Shogun. I fly a Raptor 30 and wanted something for my backyard that doesn't piss off the neighbors, so I bought a Shogun. I only bought the kit and wanted info on the best motor , or is the stock motor ok to start with? Is their LiPo battery ok or is there better ones? I'm weighting bang for the buck compared to really going for it now if you all think that's the best thing to do from the start. Would going to a brushless extend flight times?
I have only been flying helis for 6 months now and have had only one crash but have 50 or so gallons of fuel through my Raptor, so although I'm not advanced I don't think I'm all thumbs!
Any info or thoughts would be great!

This is quick and dirty rundown:

Motor: Himaxx 2025-4200 w/9T pinion
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 25
Battery: Thunder Power 3-cell (11.1V) 1320 MaH LiPoly
Gyro: Futaba GY240 or ModelSport MS-44
Servos: Hitec HS-55 or Hs-56

Peformance is much better with a brushless motor. Also, the stock motor seems to be very short-lived. Will (Baja170) used a Chili Pepper motor and loved it. But I don't know which model it was. Maybe he'll see this and join in. Some guys are also using Axi motors. But again, I don't know which model.

Thanks for the reply,
Just the info I was looking for! Is the LiPo battery zoom recommends ok also? Reason I ask is because it fits well or is the Thunder Power cell the same shape.
Thanks again for the info

The battery from Protech (Zoom) is a 1500 and a little bigger and heavier than the Thunder Power. But it is shaped to be a better fit in the frames. But there are several tricks to making the TP battery fit better.

I would suspect (don't know it for a fact) that the TP battery is better quality than the Protech pack. I know it packs plenty of punch. If you are looking for duration, you can use a TP 2100. It's a lot bigger and heavier, so no 3D. But you'll get longer flights and better stability in wind.

I have used the Chile Pepper CP-20 and it was an absolute POWER HOUSE!

They also replaced it for free when I bent the shaft trying to remove a pinion, so I would say www.brushless-motor.com is second to none in supporting their products. You will really like the Chile Pepper Motor.

Thanks, Will. I figured you might see this. :D

People also use 400DH's and AXI's like Tabb does. The Zoom is very versatile as far as motor options go. You can also use Hacker, HiMax, etc.

How is the Hacker motor. Doesn't the case spin around? Is this any better design than the standard can brushless motor? Does having the case spinning keep more inertia when say adding a good amount of collective?
At this point when I do go brushless I want to get the most effcient/powerfull motor available.
I heard the Himax gets very hot and someone said that is a case of ineficiency in the desgn or is this the case with ALL brushless motors motors?

Thanks,
