View Full Version : my 6HV went in today

I was out at the local school doing some flying, mostly to get the Vbar dialed in

first battery pack was fine, i was checking gain and stuff and everything looked solid

then the 2nd battery, i push it a bit harder, i came out of a loop into forward flight, rolled 90 degrees to the right, and hit right rudder...the tail would not get past 90 degrees, and i couldn't save it in time

i think it was my CF tail rod flexing...sucks, it was flying great, and i still have a funfly in October :(

i have most of the parts so it's fine, sucks it went in, i'm gonna go with the stock metal tail rod again, see how that works out, or i might just get more guides for my CF rod

You know, I've been really happy w/ my stock tail pushrod. However, I've got CF rods I've built on my smaller helis. Stock works out well on the 6HV for me.

Feel for ya... I've been there one too many times lately (not flight control issues though... I did have a build error on one :arggg: )
So the frame is completely fine isn't it? That's what sucks most.. cracked frames.
Get it back up soon and take some video! I'm working on mine now, FBL

the 6HV is hard on the tail, any flex and you get into my position, should've known that, then i'd still have a flying heli :P oh well, i have time till the Helifreaks Funfly in October, i'll just play around with the Atom now, while the 6HV is getting fixed

Speaking of which, how many guides are people running with the stock pushrod? I got something like 6 of them in the kit but only used 4.

I'm using 3, strategically placed and they work great. I only have 2 on my Atom 5.5.

I'm betting it's just not enough tail rotor throw. If you haven't modified the spacers on the tail shaft, you will not have enough pitch on the tail rotor to do piros during fast flight.

That's what I was going to say... and it may depend on tail blade/servo brands too... but mostly throw. Either shorten spacers 1-2mm or remove altogether.

and there is nothing magical about the dimensions i've posted in that link. Im actually going to trim them a bit shorter when I get around to it.

I agree, I think it was becouse he lack of throw. When the tail stop did you pirruette counter clockwise? Trim down the spacer closest to the tail hub to increase the throw.

Some "low" numbers in the vbar can also affect the pirruette rate. Be sure you run at least 75 in I gain (to low will make the piro rate inconsistent). To low common gain can also make the tail hesitate while pirruette in winds and high speed.

I was piroing counter clockwise, yes

I'm gonna take the spacers out altogether and get 45 degrees left and roght deflection, that should solve the problem

I think that the manufacturer included the spacers because some people were putting too much throw in the tails of the older Compass machines. I suspect this was their way of preventing the issue of people setting them up so that there was binding or locking due to going over center.

I like the idea of the one on the hub side of the slider. It's impossible to accidentally reposition the slider so that the "fork" hits the arms when spinning. I've caught myself several times on my Atom 500 before any damage was done and it would be nice to have the safety net on that heli too. At least if the slider binds against the spacer, I'll hear it in the tail servo.

Stock spacers work fine for most, but if you're gonna be doing fast, demanding manuevers, i guess you should just take it off altogether and use the gyro to limit the travel

The issue with that is if you try to get the gyro within a whisker of hitting the arms and the boom shifts in the clamp a little bit, you're likely to destroy the tail. That's the other reason I'd probably keep a spacer on there, although I might shorten it. I agree that the outer one isn't really all that useful.
