Hi,

After reading a lot about gyro problems, mostly GY-401 becuse I own one, it looks like the way to attach the gyro is important. Why is that? I am new to this and have no one local to help me out. Initially I used the Futaba tape but after a crash I removed my gyro for rebuilt. I had a cracked gyro case, completely removed from the electronic. The electronic itself looked OK so I glued back the case. I installed it again but using Velcro.

Please do not flame me as I did not know better!

So after this I have had 2 gyro related crashes. The heli flew well for 2-3 min than, during normal turn my tail snapped 180 deg and I crashed. I have had my tail do this almost every flight but could recuperate. Between the tail snaps my heli flew very well so I figure my gyro must be doing something right, it works or it doesnt!

I have read also that temperature could influence gyro response. I must admit I took the heli out of the car (probably around 50 deg F) and flew it immediately at 25 deg F.

So these are 2 factors that could have caused my crash

Tail contraction, is this possible?
Velcro instead of tape?Damaged gyro due to crash?

I fly a T-REX 450SEV2 stock with arround 30% gain on the gyro in HH mode

Thank you for your help!

I would send the gyro in and have it checked out and the case replaced, if theres nothing wrong with the gyro the case and labor will be about 30 dollars, maybe less, they replaced a nicked wire on mine too and it was 30, case only may be less.

You need some vibration isolation between the frame and the gyro in most installations. 3M out door mounting tape (its grey with red backing) used in two layers is cheap and effective. If you really want to go all out get the Zeal gel pads, some will reccomend the CSM gyro mounting tape but IMO its too spongy. Also make sure the wires are supported and not pulling on the gyro during flight.

Also the gyro sensor must stablize for temp changes or you will get drift and erratic behavior.

Agreed, send the gyro in for a checkup.

I use Zeal on a couple of my models. The Raptor and my TRex's both use 3M (Futaba tape). I change out the Raptor tape if it gets hit with nitro exhaust.

I usually velcro my gyros as well. The tape puts them in place and a velcro strap buckles them in.
