Ok, using the calculator for
3550 align motor
11.1v battery (3s 2100 20c)
150 main gear
2800 RPM (I'll be flying 325 wood blades, not sure how fast is safe but I want a high head speed for stability and response)
I come up with a 13t. Someone had posted they fried their battery with 13t. I'm thinking that may have been pitch curve related :dontknow .
Anyway..I'll have a DX6 which if I recall only has 3 point pitch curves.
Would anyone suggest a different pinion or other thoughts? If the blades will take it I'm not opposed to a faster pinion either ...ie calculator shows 14t for 3krpm.

I run a 13T on my TRexs, both of them. My flight times are between 6-7 minutes.
I've noticed people pushing time limits on the batteries or swapping them out real quick after each flight. I'd suggest keeping the time limit to about 7 minutes or so and letting the ESC cool a little bit before throwing a new pack on.

awesum. if you run the Align ESC have you done the cooling mod? it makes sense. I'll be doing that after Christmas sometime. Just gotta find thermal epoxy local.
hehe..I'm sure 6-7 mins seems like an eternity when you're learning.

I have one TRex with the cooling mod on the ESC and the other doesn't have the cooling mod done yet (I'm in the process of doing it).
There is a kit sold by Blake McBrayer on here. He includes enough thermal epoxy for two ESC's and shrink wrap. Thermal epoxy can be expensive. He buys it in bulk and then portions it out for the kits. It makes it economical for everyone.
I haven't had any problems with my ESC cutting out or burning up. I haven't noticed a flight difference, but it would appear to cool faster which means less time between packs.

What level of flying are you doing?

box atm...ie..everything is in a box :D
I will probably be starting RADDS with my TREX sometime in January/Feb. I'm up to side in hover with my blade cx and decided it's better to practice that on the Sim and just do nose in/tail in with the CX (I still have repair parts to install on my cx...been very busy getting the house ready for Christmas..painting/repairs..etc)
I expect that my flying for the next 6-8 months will be forward/backward flight (after RADDS), Piro's, Auto's...then depending on if I'm broke after the auto's I'll try flips when I'm comfortable. Only time will tell and I'm not about to try anything major with the TRex until I feel comfortable recovering from odd orientations on the sim.

Check the Finless thread nad order from Blake. Plenty of thermal epoxy is shipped and new heat shrink.
For starting out and woodies, 11t or maybe 12 is good. Joe and Tech MP says 2400 max on woodies. He has the pull strength test info and pull calcs for various head speeds on his site. Definately not 3K with woodies.

Thank you for the advice, I'll be going 13t.

Do realize that 13t will be above the rated speed for woodies.
