Can you run a 6V pack with the GY 601, it states in the book you can use 3.8 to 6 V but I know there has been some concern with the digital Servo's. I gave it a try before I asked this question and it seems to do just fine. I have a 6V regulator and run a 1650mah NiMH 5 cell pack.
Thanks

Some people put a 5V regulator just on the 601 and run straight 6V to everything else.
I haven't tried it and probley won't as I'm not good enough to get all the 3D out of 5V levels!!!!

I don't know of anyone that has used regulated 6 volts with the GY 601/9251 for any period of time. But I will be interested in hearing how it works for you after 30 to 50 flights. Not saying it won't work, just want to hear if the servo will hold up to a constant regulated 6 volts for any period of time. I have always used 5.2 volts and only lost one servo ( 9251) in about 3 years.
Please keep us informed how it works out for you.

Well I guess I'm going to give it a whirl, I'm using 3010's for the rest of my servo's the GY601 and a GV1. The regulator I'm using bypasses as soon as the voltage drops below 6v, it shows 6.0 on the GY and the GV for voltage and usually stays around the 5.5 to 5.8 mark.
I get a lot of flight time out of these packs, I have approx 10 flights so far with the 6v packs and will probably do that many today as well at the field (weather permitting).
I'll keep ya posted on the status and if I have a failure :bomb:

Do it at your own risk especially if you are using the 9261. Here is a quote from Tower's 9251 page:
This is the S9251 Digital High Speed Rudder F3C Servo
designed especially for the GY601 Gyro.
This servo will will NOT work with any other application
4.8 volts ONLY
I would not, but maybe that's just me. :)

5 Flights each today at 6v in the wind (Frances), I'm in Savannah. No problems so far. I might change one of my birds back to 4.8v and leave one at 6v and see what happens. :badair:

Racer38,
What level are you currently at in your flying? You doing aerobatics and controlling the tail alot?
Just curious.
Also even thou the GY 601 is rated to 6 volts, the specs on the servo (9251) are for 4.8 volts. That is why I am curious to see if or how long it will stand up to a regulated 6 volts.

Well I have changed back to 4.8 packs, the output from the 601 is not regulated by the Gyro, just tested it and it was 5.8 same as the output from the regulated 6v pack. I guess I need to try and find a regulator to bring it down to 4.8 constant.
The reason I like the NiMH 6v packs is how long they last before a charge is needed, after 5 tanks in the 30 they were at 5.5 volts.
I'm just starting to do some loops and rolls, did a 5 mistake high flip today and it was pretty cool but not very pretty :P . I like doing return to targets so I'm using the tail quite a bit and its cool to do a piroette on top before you come back down.

If you want to fly a lot and not recharge.......get the DURILITES Lipo's. The 4000 packs are good for 10 flight at good 3d levels. People who fly like me and you might get 15 or so!!! hahaha  You have to use a regulator with them (5.1, 5.6, or 6.0)
After seeing a few burned up 9251's online lately, I'd stay away from the 6V on Gyro. ;)
I'm on dialup at a hotel tonight and it SUCKS!!!

5.5 volts is too low to be letting a 5 cell ( 6 volt) pack discharge. The battery is dead at that voltage. You should only use a 6 volt pack till it reaches 6 volts, maybe 5.9 but not any lower.
5 cell packs (6 volt) actually discharge more and give less flights than 4.8 volt packs that are the same capacity.
If your flying the 5 cell ( 6 volt) pack below 6 volts, it is just a matter of time till you crash due to low voltage when the battery dumps all at once.

I have personally used 6Volt on my ViGOR with 601 gyro and never had any problems. That heli was setup with 6Volt for about a year before i totaled it out. The pack was 5-3000HV Ni-Mh's. all the servo's were hitec 5925 digitals (EXCELLENT servos by the way) Hope this helps!!!
