View Full Version : New Lepton Build with JAZZ 55-10-32 Problem

I've just finished building my first LeptonEX and so far have been unable to get more than 1900 RPM out of the main blades (using tach). :arggg:

I have the JAZZ programmed to Mode Four and first spool up with a linear throttle curve (0-100%) and zero pitch I get 2200 rpm at full stick(I beleive this is where the JAZZ is self calibrating). After I spool down and remove power, reconnect power, I then only get a max of 1900 rpm. Thats at full throttle stick 100%(ESC Light is on)??? It never goes above 1900 RPM. ??? This all happens using a fully 100% charged battery all within the 3 minutes of programming.

My build info is as follows:

Radio: Spektrum DX7 TX / AR7000 RX
ESC: Kontronics JAZZ 55-10-32
Motor: Hyperion Z3025-10 with 24T pinion
External BEC: Madusa 3.5 Amp 6V
Battery: FlightPower EVO 20 / 3700 mah 4S1P
3 Hitec HS-81MG servos on cyclic
Futaba GY401 w S9650 on Tail
Stock Main Blades.

Did I miss something in the build or is this problem common using the JAZZ Mode 4? :dontknow Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

programmed to Mode Four and first spool up with a linear throttle curve (0-100%)

Do not use a linear throttle curve. Use a flat line at a set % like 75%. The first spoolup needs to be at the speed you want to fly at with the set percentage and 0 pitch.

On another note 2200 with the 24 tooth is probably a little low on the throttle curve.
you may be heating up the esc and causing a thermal cuttoff. I would recommend running at least 2400rpm with that motor to keep the throttle percentage up to a reasonable level.

Mudbogger2,

Thanks for the reply. I thought first spoolup needed to be at full throttle to see what the max RPM is and allow the JAZZ to calibrate? (Mode 4 is Heli/ govener mode). Then you back your throttle number off to where you want it. In my case I can't seem to get over 1900 RPM at 100% throttle. At 50 % throttle my RPM is only 1500 RPM ??? My first spoolup throttle curve was 0,25,50,75,100 % all at zero pitch.

I guess I should try and turn the Gov mode off and see what kind of RPM I can get?

This is my first JAZZ ESC and their manual is not too helpful.

Happy Holidays!

Just leave it in mode 4 set the throttle at 75% and spool it up like this.

Go from low stick or 0% throttle to idle up1 set at 75% this will kick in the softstart feature and stop at the set speed for your throttle %.
If you are not hitting headspeeds of over 2200 at 100% throttle someting is not right. Check all your solder connections especially at the motor. That motor/pinion/battery combo shoul be humming at 3000+ rpm at 100%.

The weather improved today and I was able to do some further testing. For some reason Mode-4 (Heli mode) will still only go up to 1900 RPM max at full throttle? My first spool up at 75% throttle yielded about 1650 RPM..

I reset the JAZZ to Mode -1 (Non-governor mode) and everything worked great! I was able to get 1900 RPM with the stick at 38% and 2550 RPM with the stick at 62%. It definitely hums! Very smooth. :D I did approx 7 min of hovering on a fully charged battery and the recharge took back 2398 mah using a TP-1010C and 210 Balancer. Is that a normal result? Can I assume my setup is okay? This is my first electric so any advise is greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Any ideas on what is going wrong when the ESC is set to Mode-4?
