Well, I have a 3-4 year old 2.8GHz PC and G3 never really ran well. I had 512MB of RAM and a vid card with 64MB of RAM. Well, after a few months I got tired of it.
I did some research and asked a few friends some questions and today I did the upgrade. I bout 1GB of RAM and added that so now I have 1.5GB of memory. I replaced that wimpy nVidia with 64MB with a nVidia GeForce 7600 GS with 512MB of RAM and it is awesome. I have now turned on all the background items like shadows and stuff.

So for those who are in need of better performance, it does help a lot.

By the way, the new high end graphics cards do not get all their required power through the BUS. Most require an extra connection to the power supply and the power requirements are different. The card I got requires a 300W power supply while the really high end units require upwards of 450W PC power supply. So when you want to upgrade the vid card, keep this in mind.

Good luck all!

The machines we run at work require a 1,000 watt power supply to run the video cards in 'em.. You can arc weld with the darned things.. hehehe

I run an overclocked P4 2.8Ghz @ 3.5 Ghz, 512M RAM and a 128M Geforce 6600 and all options turned on/max and it's not twitchy at all...

well, mine was not good. I believe that the main problem was the 64MB vid card. But since RAM is so cheap these days, why not upgrade that too!

Everything is much faster now. So when I do home-work (CAD and stuff from work) it should be MUCH better! :D

The old vid card was never designed for that kind of thing. And since I dont really play games (even as a kid, never got into them) it was ok. Except when editing photos, it was a little slow, but no big deal......

1KW at 12VDC is a hellava lot of current dude! Yep you could arc weld!

I only have a 128MB video card, and I need a better one. If I have all the stuff turned on like particles and shadows, my G3.5 stutters a bit. I may wait and upgrade the whole PC as it's a P4 2.2ghz. I did stuff 1.5GB of RAM into it.

HeliDan, while you upgraded your card & memory, you may have slowed you system memory down some. When you upgrade the system memory, you need to upgrade with the same speed as the original memory, ie... 2700 with 2700 not 2700 and 3200. No matter what speed memory you add, the system will default to the slower speed that is in the system.

I took the puter into the shop and they looked at it and told me there was no memory manager that would allow the changing of parameters. :dontknow

My home machine is a 3.06Mhz Dual core overclocked to 4.20GhZ.
Ya damn skippy it gets HOT, watercooled processor and vid card, although I can't remember what card is in it now.
4G Ram, 300G raid 0 storage, DVD burners (2), etc.
This WILL be my last Pentium machine, I'm already researching AMD for the next build here shortly.

I've been getting good results from this card. More system memory has not made as much of a difference on RF 3.5 as adding a better video card.

If you are trying to run any program like G 3.5, with less than 1GB of memory. Do not forget to close all of the nasty little leach programs that start up with the computer. I will even disconnect from the internet then shut down my Virus, and Firewall software. This may help your frame rate a little.

Just don't forget to start them back up before you reconnect to the internet.

Well, I have frame rates of about 140 155 or so now which is fine.
Only thing I shut off is the shadows.
As for shutting down everything, too much trouble. I use this puter everyday and may use g3 on and off throughout the day. If I had to do that, I would upgrade the whole thing.
And since I like to fly online, I need the internet connected:mrgreen:

Thanx guys

I understand,It is a bit of a pain! But for those who can't afford the memory, or the upgrades, it might help!!

How can I determine the frame rate of my machine/card?

How can I determine the frame rate of my machine/card?

In G3, click view\gadgets\navguide

The small display will show you your frame rate in frames per second, as well as other interesting info.....

Happy Landings............

Ha, I've been an AMD guy all my life and I was considering switching to intel for thenext one. Funny...
It seems like the new pentium duo are kicking AMD's butt. I might be wrong though :dontknow
