P.S. I'm pretty sure I've seen some of his earlier work documenting the travels of BigFoot. I assume the camera operator was running barefoot on sharp rocks heated in the sun while shooting this piece. That can't be easy.

not to mention that i was smoking trying to finish my lunch and holding my beer.

seriously though i know the fliming sucked.
i hit the zoom button with out knowing so i lost the heli and coulnt find it again.
ill try it again next time we get to the field together.

Just workin' you a little Kama. If you can't abuse your friends, who can you abuse? :dontknow

The video was good enough to get me to order batteries and LiPoDapter last night!

Just got an email this morning from Sid saying the LiPoDapter shipped this morning 1st class mail (and Happy New Year). Thanks Sid!

whats a lipodapter? that vid has my vote for best cinematography, and the
script was awesome. hey no one claimed to be an award winnig producer right. you'll get better with practice. itried filming for the first time with my new camera and well lets just say i got some nice footage of the lens cap

The LipoDapter converts a standard NiCad or LiPo charger into an A123 charger. It costs $40 shipped, and it looks way nifty.

took me weeks to come up with that script

Sorry about the confusion

the dewalt packs ARE M1 ( A123) they are 36volt

i was getting confused with the V28 which are the Emoli ( which are not made by De Walt!!)

Sorry all for the confusion :(

Me bad

But the lipodaptor is a great product !! will limit the cell voltage for either lipo or M1 cells and can be used with a Nicad charger to charge lipos!!!!

cheers Tele

Hey, you guys are being kind of hard on the camera operator. I saw several brief glimpses of an object that may well have been an R/C heli. I thought the naration was inspired, and the editing - well - it moved me.

Spork: the people's poet.

How much are you looking at for an a123 pack and a lipoadaptor, then? Is a lipoadaptor just a couple of resistors soldered in somewhere, or is it more complex?

I paid $134 for a 10S A123 pack (DeWalt) including shipping. The LipoDapter ran $40 including shipping, and looks like more than a few resistors.

Hmmmm.... Well.... Hmmmm......
The few shots of it flying were well.... Hmmmmm...

I love that the thing scared all the geese away at the beginning ;)

Head speed sounds lower than I like (I am going to guess 2700). Maybe the 13T pinion might be better? I think the added weight will require a higher head speed to really get some pop out of the head.

Anyway sorry but I really couldnt tell anything from this. Maybe next time or when others get some packs going?

The LipoDapter seems a clever solution for existing LiPo chargers. Firmware upgrades to support LiFe (aka A123) cells are available for some chargers and the latest versions of some that are not field upgradable also include LiFe support (eg CellPro4S, eStationBC5/BC8/902).

Cryofix could you please post photos/information about your frame-mod to mount those A123 4S packs ?

In the video it looked like he just flipped the upper battery tray vertical. You can see it behind the battery.

BTW if one of you guys is willing to send me a pack I will give it a HONEST flight review in my 450. I'll pay cost for the pack if needed.

Head speed is set to 3050 RPM, and I needed to drop from the 13 to the 11 in order to get it below 3200 rpm. What you may have heard is the slow spool up and the head not getting 100% before I took off.

I will see if I can get some good video out, I totally blew the guys at the field away the other day when I told them it was an A123 cell.

Finless you heading East to Clint Stones? Kama and I are trying to make arrangments now to head down there.

I had to dremel off the 2 points on the frame right under the battery tray, once they were off the tray just dropped straight down, you only need about 1-2 mm off the points and it works.

Looks like the "dapter" won't be able to balance the pack?

I'm planning on picking up a couple of 6-pin TP style balance tabs, and balance with my TP-205 balancer.

Here is an extract from Sid the maker of the lipodaptor..from some question I ask him when I first go the adapter/

Q. Just was thinking can this adaptor be used on its own with out a nicad
>charger?

Sid's A. ...It's just a smart switch. You need something to supply voltage and limit
current.

Take care,

Sid

The Lipodaptor just limits the output voltage to the correct amount for what ever cells you have. You need to then also be able to control the current for the Lipos of course with a 1c charge rate. M1 ( A123) can be charger at 10a!! if needed.

Cryofix,

Any update on the 4S A123 setup? Are you using a BEC and is it a Jazz ESC that you are running?

Bumping this back up, as looking at threads of the 450, Did anyone else try these out? I have read on other sites a few flying 3 cells A123 on these birds, I myself have been flying A123 in my mini edge for a few months and my father flys only A123 now in his 30-40ish electric planes, they fly great with them the 4 cell and 5 cell ones.

Check out this thread. http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=44493. I am currently experimenting my 3S A123 setup with the align 4050kV motor with 13t pinion.

Question... which dewalt battery are you guys cannibilizing for the cells?

> which dewalt battery are you guys cannibalizing for the cells?

The model number is DC9360. Most auctions on eBay include the model number but not all so be sure to search with things like "dewalt 36V", "dewalt 36" and "dewalt battery pack" too. You'll get a lot of hits to sort through, but you will catch packs that you may have missed otherwise. I think my average for the six packs I bought a couple months ago was $105 each shipped.
