View Full Version : Lepton for some who only flew 50 size nitro?

I want to get into electric and Lepton is on the top of this list. I like the quality the power to weight and battery cost. However, since it is not much bigger than a T-Rex, how stable is it compare to a 50 size nitro or 600 size T-REX?
I tried to fly T-REX in the sim and it seems very touchy to me.
I know it is high quality and the battery is cheaper than a 600 REX or Razor but is it twitchy like a 450 size heli given the high head speed and light weight. I am just getting used to 50 size nitro. Will this be a hand's full for me?

Well it depends how it is setup, but overall, this bird is way more stable compared to a trex, much credit due to the 3ft main rotor diameter. I am running a HS of 2550 RPM and it is very stable, yet responsive.

The trex model available (for g3 at least) needed alot of tweaking to fly close to my trex so I wouldn't go off of that. I always practice on 90 sized machines in the sim and when i go to fly the lepton it feels very similar. If you want an idea in the sim of how it flys it's much closer to 90 sized birds then the trex model no question. The lepton is night and day different to the trex, they are not even close to the same class in my opinion. The trex is a fun machine, but the lepton is sooooo much smoother and just feels like a bigger heli when flying. I fly my trex then fly my lepton and it feels amazing. The trex feels very light at times almost like its floating but the lepton definitely holds its place in the sky and feels very solid. I owned a raptor 50 which I enjoyed flying, but the lepton has been the cream of the crop for me.
If you keep the headspeed on the lower end of the spectrum you'll be fine with it. I think 2500 would be very stable yet fun as toyturbo suggested.

my trex 450 is twitchy now because I made it that was. Proper setup, flybar weights and expo and it can be very stable...imho...

To add to the discussions as someone who owns a Trex and a Lepton as well as a lot of other machines, the difference is night and day. The Lepton at 2400-2800 rpm is a delight to fly, easily transported and can go from mild to wild at the touch of a switch. The Trex will always be twitchy unless you dull it down which you won't have to do with the Lepton.

I agree with Terry as well... Owning both myself the Lepton is WAY more stable and a completely different flying heli than the Trex450. This is totally an apples and oranges comparison! You wont be dissapointed!

The Lepton has more power to weight than a 50 or electric 600
yet it is not as stable due to it's physical size
but still more stable than a TRex 450
It's not a problem
Really, I would not describe the Lepton as twitchy,
it is very responsive to inputs
and it will react to the odd decent gust of wind by gaining height
It's not a problem to deal with if you can fly
If you are learning it may make you nervous

Agreed depending on your motor setup. My Lepton on 4S is my most pure POWER bird... I argue this all the time with Trex600 people inclding pro pilots... It is BY FAR a better power to weight ration of any heli I have owned to date.
AGREE it is way more stable and I think very close to a 50 sized when head speeds are close to 3K.

Well i have flown everything from a 30 to 90 the Lepton is great fun easy to handle in the sky. If you are a 50 flyer the Lepton is the way to go, power of a 50 half the size, you can get to the field and be flying in 5 minutes no having to fuel and get the starter out just connect and go. The thing most are surprised with about the Lepton is how easy it is to see in the sky and the power on demand.

Don't let the size fool you, put a decent gyro like a 720 or a 611 in it and enjoy. A 401 is marginal IMHO.
