View Full Version : Advice on gyro, please?

Hello alltogether!
In this very moment, I am in progress to receive a Turbineheli from a friend of mine.
Gyro looks from stone-ages: Huge. Graupner GY-600.
But I do not plan to replace that gyro straight away: Why change something that apparently worked fine before? ;)
Nevertheless, a question on my side...
(if the occasion should arise nevertheless... ;) )
When equipping a Turbine-ship with a gyro, would you recommend to take certain things into consideration or can they be treated as "normal" gassers, like Raptor90 in example?
Ship in question is a FuturaSE, equipped with the Wren MW54 turbine.
Thanks already now for any advice or stories!
Cheers,
Daniel

Danyboy, I don't think the Turbine presents any more problem than a gasser in fact the have a lot less vibration than a gasser. I am using a Futaba 601 in my turbine with the Wren MW54 and all I did was set it to default settings and flew, nothing needed to be reset. Craig B

Thanks Craig!
So in that case, I'll get that 6100T from Logictech...
It's said to be almost as good as Futaba's 601, but at only two thirds of the 601s pricetag... ;)
Looking really forward... I just hope I can sleep tonight so I'll be fit tomorrow for first flight... ;)
Cheers,
Daniel

Hey,
Price and performance wise you cannot go far wrong with a Futaba GY401 & S9254 combination either. This is what I am running in my Century Predator Turbine.

Daniel,
Both Craig and Ian have given you good advice. I have had super luck with both the GY601 and 401 with appropriate servo's.

Guys...
Only one thing to say...
*settingupapokerface*
Awesome to the max...
In other words: I DID IT!!! :)
I'd like to say, big ones like 60 class and higher are definitely a different class than the small electric ones, not bigger or heavier or louder, just different.
But turbines...
Oh man...
We have a saying here that Heli are the king's class of aero-modelism...
I say Turbine-Heli are the king's class of the king's class... :glasses2:
The whining turbine, the fomping blades, the smell... Close your eyes, and you think you're back at the airfield, staying 30m away from a JetRanger... :)
It's another heli, I'm gonna put my label on: "I am proud to own it..." :)
I can confirm on topic of vibrations: It appears to be at the level of electrics...
Talking about the Logictech, it's also incredible.
Though I do not have any reference to 401 or 601, I did some fiddling with other gyros - including the 210 in a electric-400-heli - and I am amazed at the parameters one's able to set. And compared to the old Graupner/JR GY-900 that was installed beforehand, the tail is simply nailed and fixed to external inputs, even in rate-mode without much tweaking...
What I do especially like, is the display that you can interact with. Of course, other systems might have that on a second box, but why do I need to carry around some extra weight, when I only need it once and can have everything in one box? ;)
As requested per PM, I'll try to post some pictures after I got some sleep... :)
And then again, I'm so excited I might never get to sleep... :)
Cheers,
Daniel

Craig,
Hooked and hooked!!!! Always glad to hear from another satisfied turbine flier.
Craig, do you remember your first time "out of the box" with a turbine? Man! I sure do....and, it just gets better and better.

Like it was yesterday! Never get tired of the sound or the smell of burning kero, sensory overload! Craig

Craig,
Only recently, have I joined our local flying club (Patuxent Aeromodelers). We had a pretty good relationship with several of the local schools, who, by the way, usually put their schools on some very large, prime for flying, real estate. Unfortunately, the 4-wheelers have screwed us over by coming in and tearing up the playing fields located behind the schools, forcing them to "lock-down" the grounds on weekends. In all cases, the schools have actually apologized to us and said that, if we flew more (we run the 4 wheelers off), they could have left the fields open for us and, actually, in one case, have offered to make an arrangement to give me a duplicate key to the gates. However, I really needed to support our local guys and gals anyway, so I joined.
Enough about that. What I started to say before getting off on a tangent was the one thing I love to do is just showing up with my turbine, keep my mouth shut, put my AMA card on the freq board and then, walk down get set up and start the turbine. Being primarily a "planker" field, little attention is paid to "another heli type" until that turbine starts winding up. I get a little bit of attention when I pull the fire bottle out of the truck, however most consider me a bit "anal" about flying anyway, however that turbine wind-up gets the attention every time.....and, then some.

Hooked?
Hooked?!?!?!
Are you implying that I am an addict?
Waaay off, boy, I can quit any time I want...

:D:D:D
The only PITA is the fact, I can't fly my new baby where I usually fly...
Problem here in switzerland is, that many people get teased by ads and start to think that helis are actually easier to fly than planks, since helis can stand still while in air, and planks can't, right? ;)
So the problem is, if they allow turbines on our field, it is very likely for another dumbass to show up and willingly but not realizingly risk his life along with others, simply because he had of money, what he didn't have of brain...
So that means 1,25hr worth of driving instead of 10mins, but then again, I rather stay with other weirdos than listening to those lame joke-lines of the "normalos"...
It is really a different class of modelism, and I would like to thank all of you guys here at helifreak...
As for pictures, I hope you're not too angry, if I direct toward another forum?
In flightforum.ch, you'll get lots a pictures as well as a movie (at the bottom), so here you go:

I remember the first time I fired mine up I had a grin that looked like Nicholson in Batman
