Ultemate gears for the Shogun heli

I have made some gears for the Shogun that are tough as nails.
They do not strip under load.
I have over 100 flights on my first set.
Others have been using for months now with the same results.

Hey Chris,

I received my gears today, they look very good. Waiting on a new TR drive shaft from Mac Hodges, then I will give them a try.

Is there anything special I need to know about the installation of the gears?

Got a set of the gears from chris and they are great!! I have a shogun hear and the gears were broken on a brand new machine never flown.

Just have a problem the Speed controler doesn't have a soft turn on or off and I"m afraid the gears will go with the sudden stop of the motor. Going to recomend the Pheonix 10 for him.

Gears were not to bad for installation. Use a pair of ball link pliers to remove the old one in the gear box, and use a vise and the old gear to put on the new. works great.

I will be making some new gears out of different flavors of plastic over the new year.
The materials I will be testing

Vespel SP-1 polyimide is the ultimate high-performance material for the world's most demading applications. No other material can match Vespel's combination of temperature resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical toughness, natural lubricity,wear-resistance and insulation properties.

Torlon® 4203 polyamide-imide offers excellent compressive strength and the highest elongation of the Torlon® grades. It also provides electrical insulation and exceptional impact strength. This grade is commonly used for electrical connectors and insulators due to its high dielectric strength. Its ability to carry high loads over a broad temperature range makes it good for structural components such as linkages and seal rings. Torlon® 4203 is also an excellent choice for wear applications involving impact loading and abrasive wear.

Nylatron® GSM Blue Nylon
The first cast nylon to combine both molybdenum disulphid (MoS²) and oil for the load capacity of Nylatron GSM nylon, plus improved frictional characteristics. It excels in higher pressures, and at low speeds-up to 40 fpm. It offers 20% lower coefficient of friction, 50% greater limiting PV, and a lower "k" factor than Nylatron GSM, and the lowest "slip-stick" of any nylon product making it ideal for slide pads, thrust washers and trunion bearings. Nylatron GSM Blue should be considered for any oil-filled nylon application. It is dark blue in color.

I have installed "Vespel" gears in two of my helicopters.
I have over 25 flights on the gears, with no signs of wear.
I will keep you all informed on the progress.

The quality of the "Ultem" gears alone is 10x better than stock.
The design is superior to both as well.
Material is as good as the manufacturer states.
I just lubricated mine with "silicon spray", and did not recomend it in my instructions, "I fiqured people would just do it".
I still have plenty of Shoguns flying around in my local area alone, with 50 plus flights on them front & rear.
The blue gear is just a "Fad" , and is not better in my opinion."Only has molded in lubrication in the material"
The Ultem gears were "HOT" when they first came out "I sold hundreds right away".
I have now tested the Blue gears in one of my spare heli's.
They are not any better in my opinion, but what is my opinion.
I have only been making these plastic gears for the Shogun since it was born, and machining for 20 years. :cool:

After further testing, it appears the Vespel gears are supirior to any other.
Only at a very high material cost.
After speaking to the engineer at Dupont Vespel & Quadrent plastics.
No other plastic can match the properties of the Vespel.
At $20 an inch there is no other equal.
It appears that the many different types of propriatery prosseses and materials used in manufacturing of Vespel it is VERY expensive.
Both companies agreed that Vespel is very unique.
The Quadrent engineer said one other type of Nylatron has a zero "slipstick" factor, but will not be as strong & wear risistant as Vespel.
I will try some next time I run some gears.
For now it seems I will be making the Vespel gears from hear on out.
If anyone is interested I will run them on a limited basis.
