hey guys

First off yes i have done a search and have gone through several write ups on how to tune ETC ETC. Today i was out trying to tune in my Raptor 60 with a YS61 with pump running Morgan Cool power 33% with an OS#8 Plug. I began my adventure Extremely rich to where it wouldn't even lift of the ground at full throttle. I began to make aggressive lean adjustments after several attempts with 2 or 3 clicks only. I came to a point where i am able to hove and do full throttle climb-outs but man it just seems powerless. Im trying to follow these write ups as best as i can but i cant seem to get into the sweet spot at all. By the sounds of the heli and the way i see the smoke transition in throttle i need to richen up my low speed, but with ONE click its so rich on the low end it will barley hover. If i go the opposite way with the low speed (lean) it seems to begin to make that lean 2cycle popping noise that i have been told to keep away from. I have also notice i have to have almost 1/2 throttle to get the model to run and stay running which is way off from what it use to be before i messed around with the needles :( . I also have been keeping a GOOD glow plug the model at all times. Also i would like to state today temperature was around 33F, just to give some of you a rough idea of what im trying to do here.

I don't have the owners manual for the engine. I have tried to find one over the Internet but i cant seem to get my language program to work so non of the material is readable for me. One last concern i have is the High speed needle i assume is the needle that is closest to the fuel supply line?

Thanks

Dude!!! I went through the same thing. DAYS OF FRUSTRATION!!!!

The secret is that little screw that is flush! They should call that the "hover screw" or something not low needle. The motor can not be tuned till that screw is dead on.

Turn the long (mid-range) and short (high-end) screw back to factory and get the motor running good and in a hover with the little flush screw. Once you get that. Run a tank or 2 though it just hovering and checking temperature. Then tune as normal.

The instructions that come with the motor are about worthless for tuning but my YS now runs like a YS :smokin:

Oh here is the manual

Here is how the needles work on a YS.

The needle in the carb barrel is what is called the Low End. It controls the mixture of the idle and the transistion to the mid range. It does affect how the mid range runs. Usually it is close when that needle is flush with the carb barrel.

Now the long needle is the mid range. This needle controls from about 20% to 60% barrel opening. It is affected by the low end needle that is in carb barrel.
Usually about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns open from fully closed is about right with 30% Cool Power.

The short needle controls the high end mixture from 60% to 100% barrel opening. This needle is affected by the setting of the mid range needle. Normally the high end needle is about 1 to 1 1/4 open from fully closed with CP 30%.

As suggested. Start the motor and make sure the idle is nice and smooth. A little to the rich side, but not burbling rich.
Now hover the model and adjust the mid range needle till the motor runs nice and consistent in a hover. Not lean, but just on the edge of four stroking.

Now that those two needles are set, the high end is ready to be set. Fly the model around at full throttle. Do a few loops and such and then do an auto rotation. When the throttle hold is engaged. The motor should drop to a nice idle. You can lean the high end mixture till that when you hit throttle hold. That the motor just hangs a little from being lean. Then richen it up about 2 or 3 clicks and you should be set to go.
The settings I mentioned above is where I ran my YS 61's on CP 30% with a Hatori SB 10 muffler. They should get you in the ball park of a nice running motor.
