Nicad or Nickel cadmium setting on a gell cell

My charger does not support sealed lead acid batteries as a charge mode, can I use the nicad or nickel cadmium setting to charge. I have tried both settings on the battery and the nickel cadmium setting seems to be more gentle at o.2 amps but the peak voltage when nearing full charge does seem to be high, also I can hear the reactions going on in the battery if I put my ear right near the battery.

I would not be putting my ear near the battery when charging with a charger not suited for the type of battery. I would have the battery outside in a shelter so when it blows it doesn't hurt anything or anyone.
