View Full Version : Should you rotate your LiPos?

I have 4 LiPo packs for my T-Rex. Sometimes I may only fly 1 or 2 packs on a given day. Should I use the same pack #1 and #2 over and over again or should I rotate them around and use each of the 3 4 packs an equal amount? Not sure if best to use pack #1 and #2 a lot or better to use pack #3 and #4 the next time flying. Any thoughts on pros and cons of evenly rotating use or using 1 or 2 packs more than the other 2?

In the long run, it makes little difference.
If you mainly fly packs 1 and two, then you will get a handle on the max number of cycles so you can budget replacements.
If you fly them all equally, they should all perform the same.
I have two packs that I mainly fly and try to balance out the cycles on them. I have several other packs that I fly seldom. But in my case the two main ones are DN and relatively inexpensive to crunch. The others are TP Prolites and a bit mor money. :)
Remember if you aren't going to be flying for a long period, discharge them to 3.8 - 3.85 volts per cell.

Can I beat Spork to this one and simply say: I prefer to rotate my head/blades/rotor

One dares to know the mind of spork!!!
But yes, I probably would have made a silly comment like that.

No, no no.. What PilotSmith means is, do you put 'em on right side up one flight, then upside down the next. Well, of course you do! You've got to get the electrons to stop settling in one part of the battery. Rotating them keeps the electrons distributed properly and ensures long pack life.

I have mine labeled #1, #2, #3. I fly them and charge them in order because I have the memory of an ant and want to buy (3) new packs at the same time

That's what tic-tocs are for.

Interesting. I've been rotating them just to distribute the crash damage more evenly over the pack.

Sigh... I should have known better than to use the word rotate in a heli forum. :shakeit

Ah, but for those enough that don't/can't (I fall into both categories) do tic-tocs, we need to do it manually.
I do like Spork's battery rotation philosophy too.

Rotate mine as well, but tic-tocs sounds good...
