I was going to get another Fury Extreme as a second heli to my Tempest 3D but couldn't resist not to consider an ION. I am curious as to what everybody is using in these machines. I heard that the hacker motor overheats? and to use an Actro 32-4 motor. As far as charging the Li-Po's what kind of a power source for the charger is required? I am hoping a small motorcycle battery will do! Also will a GV1 be good idea or I can setup the headspeed from the speed controller? Sorry for the too many questions, I am just trying to decide on which heli to get an Extreme or an ION. Thank you for your help.

Hi Jimmy

If you want to go with an outrunner, use the Actro 32-3...NOT the 32-4, unless you do not want any more than 46 to 50 level performance.

A small motorcycle battery would not even charge one of the packs once. If you need a separate battery to take to the field with you, get the biggest (Amp-hour) deep cycle marine battery you can find. However, I find that as long as the battery in my car is in good condition, I can get a few charges on that before I need to start the engine and let it recharge (usually 15-30 minutes). You can also charge the batteries at home well in advance of going to the field without the need to re-peak them.

Some are having good luck with the GV-1. See Shannon's post's.

Thanks Chris. After I posted, I did some research on the batteries and realized that a motorcycle battery will not do much! Do you recommend I get the outrunner? or just use the stock motor? I really have no brand preference. I want reliability and don't want it to overheat. I know that charging a 8000 mAh battery at 8 amps will take 1.5 hours but how long will the battery take to recharge after a 10 min. flight or so. I am asuming it will not use 8000 mah in 10 min. Thanks

Hi Jimmy
The Ion-X in stock configuration will pull about 35 amps on average. This means that in 10 minutes, you would use about 5.83 AHr's. Putting current back in at a rate of 8 amps would refresh that in 43 minutes plus. This of course does not take heating or other inefficiencies into account so your mileage may vary a little...but probably not all that much.
Should you use a different motor? If you don't have a Hacker or are waiting to get one, you might consider one of the outrunners instead. There are many, many good motors out there, each with it's own set of characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.

Hi Chris,

What motor would fly the ion (3d) better?

There are many, many great motors out there.

In outrunners, the Actro 32-3 or 24-4 are best for power and the 40-4, 24-5 or 32-4 will get you good lifting/sport type performance. if raw power is what you seek, the 32-3 works well.

In the LRK (Torcman) line, also outrunners, go with the 430-30, 10 pole in a 14 or 16 turn variant. These will give great performance and will go fairly easy on your other gear. The 12 turn will give extreme power but at the cost of reduced flight times and possible lifespan if allowed to overheat. Additionally, it can over stress the rest of your power system.

There are several other motors that I have samples of now and will be testing soon to determine the usefullness of in this application.

Prices range from about $150 to $400 retail...
