View Full Version : Hurrican 50 Carbon Fiber/Metal build!
I posted on RR but will post on HeliFreak as they have a dedicated forum for the Hurrican. I usually don't post something like this but I thought I would give honest non biased opinion to those who might be considering the heli...
Well to my surprise (expecting heli tomorrow) the new Hurrican 50 was awaiting me tonight! Packaging looks great and I don't know which is nicer, the heli or the embroidered shirt that came with the kit! (yeah I know the heli's nicer) I've included some pics of the kit. First off, a few heli manufactures need to take a page from the hurrican instructions, they are VERY well written with pics and diagrams. Everything is nicely baged and numbered. The C/F frames are thick and the metal head/parts look to be very nice. The rest of the goodies will come tomorrow (engine, servo's, gyro etc). I will do my best to post progress of the build. I did take the C/F blades out and put them on my scale to check how far off they are from the get go...not too bad (.06g)difference
Ok, for an update. I put the lower and upper frames together tonight. Parts are all fitting rather well, no issues except I had to drill a hole in C/F side frame (missing a small hole for landing gear brace) I also had to round out a few holes in the C/F side frame for a few braces to "seat". Nothing out of the ordinary. So far, Im very impressed with the quality! It's built like an ox! When you put both the upper and lower frames together, with all the braces it utilizes, it's quite nice that each screw goes in with out any binding...the frames were made well. One thing I did notice that should have been addresed at the beginning is that heli can accept both CCPM and MPM mixing. The instructions do not discern between the two and a newbie will (could) spend a lot of time putting parts together before realizing the parts are not needed for CCPM. Nice touch to have if one does not have a newer technology radio but the instruction should state this clearly right from the get go. One thing very nice (for me at least) is this model clearly states in the instructions it is intended and built for an O.S. 50 Hyper. Everything from the engine mount, cooling fan and hardware. It actualy states this a couple times in the instructions...cool. Also, looking at the clutch setup, I except very minimal runout on the engine/clutch assembly. The way it's designed, it minimizes it from the get go. Also, the fan is very light weight and is pre drilled for a magnet (such as for a GV 1). That's it for now, here are some pics.

Naz,
In the manual in bold on every page (top left) it depicts wether it's CCPM, MPM or required for both CCPM/MPM
I see what you are saying though, maybe they could explain in the beginning of the manual what the difference is so as your building you could pay attenion to which way you want to built it, that would be helpful for someone just building for the first time, I knew I was going to set mind up CCPM and just blasted right through.
Rusty and I have been working on a couple of things for the manaul like the center to center measurement for all the links instead of the rod length between the links.
It does indicate MPM or CCPM on each step. Heck, now that Im actualy reading the manual (ha ha).. the introduction does state the heli is capable of Cyclic Collective Pitch Mixing or Mechanical Pitch Mixing. I just can see people diving in to step one...two....three and not realizing they are building parts for MPM mixing. My only feedback wold be to have in bold print just prior to step one a disclaimer of some sort...."Please note this heli can be set CCPM or MPM, please refer to each step as all steps may not pertain to your specific radio setup..." Something like that, we're splitting hairs here. Fact is the instructions are very very nice!!

Yeah,
Since the Heli is actually manufacturered in China I'm not sure if Rusty is going to be able to make changes to the manual but I'll talk to him later today, What Rusty and I were thinking was to add an addendum sheet with the manual since there really is very little that needs to be included as this heli is ready to "rock and roll" right out of the box, just a few minor things that we've noticed like you mentioned let follks know what to look out for depending on which way they want to build it, rod lengths, I was also thinking of a setup for a 9Z like servo layout on the CCPM, swashplate height for a 3D zero midstick setup. I like the way RjX did it by putting the MPM parts all in a separate bag so if your going CCPM you just toss it back in the box and forget about it.
Hey naz, I'll mail your header tank out tomorrow :) and I've found the magic number to setup your swashplate to allow full throw top/bottom no binding is 18mm from the bottom of the swash to the top of the upper bearing block with your collective stick in the middle (zero pitch)
Happy building,

Well, Thought I'd jump in here and help out but, Clyde has done it all, everything seems to be under control. Naz, enjoy the build.
Naz give me a call, I sent you a email Rusty
Thanks Clyde! Also, I appeciate the dimensions for the swash! Being that Im a JR fan, (9303 radio) I'll compare to what you suggest for full +/- collective/cyclic along with where my radio ended up (endpoints, pitch curve etc)

so 18mm is the "magical" number?? wow, that will save me like HOURS of going back and forth!!! Thanks a million Clyde

last update for the weekend! I tackled the fan/clutch assembly today and installed the magnets for the GV1. I first drilled a 2nd hole opposite of the existing hole for the GV1 magnet. The factory hole was not symetrical (centered) between fan blades so I really had to make sure the second hole was offset as such. (see pic). As the plastic fan is very light, it is also very thin so care was taken not to drill through all the way. (although I did drill two small pin holes all the way through to act as a relief for the epoxy) I then balanced the fan on a high point and shaved just a smidgen (sp?) of plastic off to balance. The most impressive piece is the self guiding tappered brass collars that really do an effective job of aligning the fan/clutch assembly to the crank!! First shot and I was at .001 on the clutch hub!! The fan was off a bit more (.002)due to manufacturing im sure. (measured both on runout and lateral axis..see pic) Good enough for me and the girls I date!!! I've got to say, for someone who is getting into the hobby, having a "self aligning" clutch assembly with out the tools or knowledge for runout would be in GREAT shape compared to other models. When I installed the clutch shoes, the two holes where it bolts down the the clutch hub were off. Well, just one hole was by just a fraction so I had to drill in an effort to elongate the hole just a very, very little bit. That was all it took. I went ahead and measured runout on the clutch shoes and it was on the money! (with a lot of variables due to the "spring action" of the shoe itself.) I was really just wanting to ensure my modification was true...no problem!! Kudos to the mfg for a sound clutch assembly.

Not a lot to report, installed the engine and GV1 sensor (why does it seem I always have to drill new holes in the mounting bracket??) Anyway, engine is dialed in and installed along with main gear and main shaft... Should be able to start working the tail soon... Canopy is off to my painter!

Thanks for the up date and sharing your build with everyone. This is a real help as I know alot of people are looking at the Hurrican but are waiting to see someone as yourself build it.
Your header tank should be there along with some other stuff any day.
Enjoy Rusty
Well, I got the tank, header tank (thanks Clyde!) and swash/washout base done. Not a lot but it's making progress. No issues, great quality swash and head assembly. One thing I do want to mention, the ball joints fit very well onto the links. No reaming the links and very smooth link movement without any binding or hesitation from the nylon links. naz
Ok, update... Got the head assembly together along with the boom, tail assembly and centered out all my servos. All in all, the kit has been great! I did go with a Century rear tail grip (2 axial bearings with 3rd thrust bearing). I had an extra from my Hawk Pro and what do you know??? It fits perfectly! SWEET! Had a difficult time seating the rear tail block to the boom, had to sand it down with great care then "press" it into the cnc machined block. The other problem I had was the flybar carrier bearing was off center by just a very little, this created a off balance flybar. I compensated with a slight adjustment of the flybar positioning (.25mm one side vs the other). Static balanced, all was good. I went with the J/K Hatori muffler, that took a bit of time to get the brackets correct...looks fantastic! Servo installation was no problem, everything went very well and everything lines up nicely. Hope to have the linkages together over the next week and fire the engine over next weekend if Im lucky... I did go with different flybar paddles, C/F boom supports (cause I had them). I will weigh the heli with servos, JR rx and Duralight 4000Mah in the coming days...

naz Did you unloosen the clamp bolt as this will release the case to allow the boom to slip in nicely? You sound as though your really liking the CF Hurrican 50? I hope you are! Enjoy
This neat little exhaust deflector keeps all that dripping oil out of your vehicle and off of the counter tops. RjX sells these for 8.99 Colors are:
Yellow, Orange, Dark gray and black. You should try one they work.

Hey Helibrite,
Where did you get that pipe???
Man that looks sweet.
..another update. I completed the servo installation along with with linkages. Everything went very smooth, still very impressed with the quality of the ball joints and their smooth operation. Let's see here, Rusty overnighted me a different hub assembly to install as mine had two holes for the seesaw drilled just a bit off center. I really want to thank RJX as they sent the part to me overnight SATURDAY delivery...thanks guys!! I have probably spent at least 12 hours on the servo/head linkage/swash installation ensuring all aspects were dead on at 0 degrees pitch. (between beers..not a good idea :)) Swash movement from full negative to full positive equated to near perfect level swash throughout the pitch range. Everything else from there was a piece of cake with all arms level and perpendicular to the hub. I installed the the sensor for the 611 gyro and will tackel the rear linkage tomorrow. Im going with the stock rudder control rod for now until my carbon fiber kit comes in. Also, Im going to idle out a tank of fuel in effort to bring the engine to life tomorrow :)

Naz,
I love your marble build table  I tried to tell my wife that I need to build on the kitchen counter top because it was nice and level, that went over like well let's just say I hitailed it :badair: haha, she is going to let me put up a wall in the garge between the single and two car space and built the "He Man's hobby room" though, I think she wants me to get the heli's out of her dining room :dontknow
anyway, the build looks like it going great, can't wait to see what you think after you get it in the air.
Take care,
Clyde
well, it's certainly not the "build table", more like the only real place I have with good lighting for pics!! I think Im going to have to take my other heli and plank out to fly tomorrow...too much time in the office "locked away"! ha ha

naz,
What is your other heli? I would be good to know what you are comparing the hurrican too.

Ghostrider, Im trying not to compare as I think each machine has their +/-. I do have a Rappy, Hawkpro and blinged out Trex (that I love). Outside of that I still have a GMP KingCobra and a Kalt Barron 20 back at my mothers house from when I was a teen...but I certainly don't count those! ha ha

Fair enough Naz! I am however very interested to hear your comments about how the Hurrican fly's.
Thanks for doing this for us. I called to order one a couple of days ago and unfortunately, they were out of stock. :arggg: I have been pondering this purchase for some time now but it is difficult for me to buy something without seeing it live in person...or at least a bunch of videos of the Hurrican in action.
You sharing this information has really helped me make up my mind.

Will James shot some AWESOME video of Steven Fox flying his Hurrican at the Esprit event a few weeks ago, he really gave it a workout, Will said he would try to get it posted soon.
Ghost, I know that Rusty just sold a few kits and sent an entry level kit to me as a pilot prize at the Port Charlotte FF next week and he has a BIG order do to arrive anyday.

Yah, he said hopefully this week he should have everything back in stock. I cant wait. The bummer part is, I am going to the Las Vegas fun fly this coming weekend. It would have been great for RJX to have one in the air at the show.
I know myself and a lot of other people are very interested in seeing one of these birds in person.

Not a problem! It will be nice to get it in the air and see how she flies! Im impressed with the heli so far. I really want to see how things break in..alignment, tracking and other variables. Wish I had a broken in Hyper 50! ha ha

Hey naz,
You got that baby in the air yet?????
Well I've got the electronics installed. GV1, 611, Duralight power/regulator and rx. Everything looks great... ! Center of gravity is spot on with just a bit nose heavy. Painter is still not done with the canopy so that will have to wait. Im going to fire the engine today and idle out a tank. Still have to install rear tail pushrod. My carbon fiber piece is still not in ;( No issues to share as everything has been straight forward with servo/radio installation. I think there's enough processing power on this heli to give my home computer a run for it's money... ha.
