I got the ultem gear set for the t/r and went to put it on. But I'm an idiot, I didn't measure how far out the rotor hub is! Oops. I measured where the gear goes, 5mm, but not the rotor. Can someone please check theirs and tell me how far from the end of the shaft the t/r hub goes. Thank you!
Also, aside from spending $$$ on the tail assembly, has anyone farted around w/ a way to get rid of the slop in the assembly where the blade grips go onto the hub? I'm thinking of trying some low cost ideas and will post if anything comes to fruition, but was wondering if others have tried anything. Thanks,
j
ps: just out of curiousity, what blades are ya'll running. I'm thinking these stock foamies look like they are gonna break if I sneeze and want to get some to have on hand. Again, thanks.

Hey J,

I have my tail gears, shaft, everything torn apart. I can't tell you the measurement. Sorry. I have the same gears ordered, so let me know what you find as soon as you try them.

I am just running the stock blades also.

Hey Rob,
Just FYI, I've only gotten one response on this question on another board, and that reply was that someone has 2mm. Hope it helps.

I had the same question about a week ago. I just got back from a little side trip to Bosnia/Kosovo and sorry this reply is late. If you do a search via Google for a Graupner Microstar 400 you can actually get a PDF manual which is more extensive than the instructions which come with the bird. Relax, the first pages are in German, but just keep scrolling down for the English and French versions. They show that the end of the tail rotor output shaft should be in line with a straightedge placed on the outside surfaces of the tail rotor blade grips. Hope this info helps you and others.

Hey folks, here is what Chris (CurlyQ) sent me on the installation of the gears:

Here is how I install the gears.

1)Completely remove tail boom.

2)Remove the rear tailrotor housing.

3)Remove the output gear shaft.

4)mearsure the didsance from the end of the stock gear on the short side "should be 7/32".

5)dremmel off the old gear

6)In a small vise, I press the new gear on from the short side, with a socket that fits over the shaft.

7)I reinstall the rear tail gear housing to the way I want, with small gap between end of brass or purple gear & Ultem gear.

8)Tighten screws on rear gearbox housing around the shaft, alighnment of the gear box to the main rotor not critical at this point.

9)Now install the front gear over the hex, "BE SURE THAT HEX FLATS ARE PARALELL & UNDER SETSCREWS"

10)lightly finger tighten the set screws against the shaft for now "IN SEQUENCE, AS NOT TO PUSH OFF CENTER".

11)lightly push gear against bearing as to have no end play in the setup, "VERY CRITICAL" this is what kills stock gears.

12)now firmly tighten set screws as tight as you can without stripping, "WANT POSITIVE LOCK"

13)Spin set-up by hand to be sure of smooth operation, ajust end play if neccesary.

14)Re-install tail boom.

15)the gears should have some play "SIDE TO SIDE" and very little end play, but not much.

16)torque the 4 screws that hold the boom in place.

17)loosen the rear housing and adjust squareness to the main rotor setup.

18)re-check for gap on step #7

19)turn on transmitter

20)plug in heli batt.

21)spool up heli

22)fly
