I get an error at startup: D3DERR-Invalid Call. Then something about DirectX. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix? thanks.

This is not a common error. It would be useful to know what graphics card you are using. Chances are very good that you are using an unsupported graphics card or an out of date driver.
You can find out what graphics card is being used by clicking Start | Control Panel | Display | Settings. In the middle of the tab should be a drop-down box that has the name of the graphics card.
