Hi all new to the forum and hobby. I've been pratcing on the sim(phoenix) for several months and getting pretty good at flying what will be my new bird mon.,the kit will be here then(550 3g) and am able to fly well in rate mode onthe sim can hover, fly invert, still crash some need more work there, can flip all round and recover but really get screwed up when i go to heading hold. any thoughts? also having never actually flown a heli, a lot of people say the sim is harder is this really true or just that people are not setting up the sim to make it fly like their heli? thanks for any replys!

well, i dont think that the sim is harder than real life, just different. Even though you are getting a feel for the heli in the sim. I highly recommend that you follow through RADDs (http://www.dream-models.com/eco/flying-index.html). This will feel like your learning all over again, but the thing is that it helps you to get in the air with minimal damage (if any at all which is always a good thing).

The thing with RADD's method is that it helps you to get a feel for the heli. This is something that you will definitely notice as soon as you power up the heli. The sim is a great learning tool but it does not replace actual flight time.

I don't think you want to fly in rate mode, especially backwards/inverted. I'd just forget about rate mode for now and fly everything in HH.

Make sure you go to edit model, physics and set the slider to 100%. It's by default 50% which makes all models very sluggish and too easy to fly.

Simulator is harder for some people (including myself), because there is no depth and it feels a little bit disconnected.

I am not big fan of RADD school, but if you have never flown a real heli before, do RADD by all means. Simulator is only secondary learning aid to real stick time and your simulator skills won't transfer 1:1 (more like 1:10, especially at the beginning) if you don't practice on real thing.

looked at the radd school and to my surprise i learned on the simm in a simular fashion as they teach, perhaps not quite as slowly at first but same idea. I know what you mean by the depth of field thing crash many times cause of it! I have found though that for me i think it is easier at least at first to fly in rate mode as it transfers more closely to fixed wing flying so it seems more natural, I know i'll never be able to fly 3 D like the young guys today do it makes me dizzy just watching them, the movements are so quick my eyes don't follow well. But i would like to learn hh it just seems i get screwed up more. I guess i'll end up flying in a more scale fashion but love flying the heli!

HH makes you "chase" the tail more, rate mode the tail follows but only if you're doing FF. Would be real good to get used to HH as it will keep tail from drifting when you don't want it to. Still, if you're having success with rate mode and really only aspire to scale and sport flying, rate mode will serve you well. :D

I made a post earlier on the board and read this later on . I just purchased a DX7 and a Phoenix sim. I want to buy a Trex 500. I have left the controls factory on the DX7 and the Phoenix sim (I don't know how to change anything) but I find the controls quite sensitive. I find the inputs not to be very much and the model 500 that I am using is....well...almost all over the place. Is there anything that I should go in and change in my settings to make the 500 model as close to the real deal as possible. Where should the settings be to best represent the 500?

I understand that this is going to take a while to learn, I would just like to be set up correctly from the start!

I have not flown a real RC helicopter. Just a 3 channel toy :o

Push physical slider to 100% in edit model (first tab) and add 25% on your radio (DR/EXPO menu).
Real heli controls are even more sensitive than default sim controls.

The 500 is more stable than a 250-but in the hands of a new pilot it is INTIMIDATING!! You won't believe the POWER it has and if it is set up to do 3D you WILL have a VERY hard time with it initially. I like the sim for learning advanced flight but,IMO-it doesn't make you ready to fly a T-Rex 500 if you haven't flown a collective pitch heli.

You can tame it down by limiting the amount of +/- pitch as well as running a flat(not 90-100%) TC. But it is a monster for someone who has NEVER flown. Get someone with experience to help you get set up.

As good as they are-the sim is just that-a simulation. And yes, until you get comfortable hovering etc.-you will feel 2 steps behind.
