So I brought my A123 pack to Arbor today with the intent to let Bob test it out and give us a feedback on it. But Bob is running an Align 35G esc, so he was worried that the BEC would get fried. So we tested this on my bird. I'm running a CC35A and JGF 500TH. I don't have an A123 capable charger yet, but Jason was kind enough to let me charge the pack on his TP charger.

A123 on woodies, 2600rpm(tached) HS, the punch out is definitely affected. The power's there, but you can just feel the extra weight of the pack keeping it from becoming a rocket. The CG was off, but not that bad. I was tail heavy by 2 clicks using my lipo, with the A123, I'm 3 clicks head heavy. Normal sport flying felt the same to me, just the punch out felt dampened. Undetered, Bob loaned me a set of his carbon fiber blades, after another charge we bumped the HS to 3100rpm. That helped, it climbed faster, but I was too nervous about not crashing Bob's carbon blades.

Then Bob then gave me a set of old style align 315mm carbon blades that he said he won't be needing anymore. Although 315mm, it is just slightly shorter than my 325mm woodies. So I put that on and gave it another test at 3100rpm HS. This combo seemed to do the trick. It punched out just as fast as when I was running my woodies at 2700rpm on lipos. Which is quite fast if you read my review on the JFG 500TH. I can still feel the weight, but I think it is very acceptable to fly it this way. Also remember I'm on the JGF 500TH 12T, a much more powerful motor than the 430L, so I think this helped a bit.

The A123 pack weighed in at 330g with the balance connector and Deans main connector. I had it flattened out instead of 4 cells in a bunch like most people. This is due to my STK frame's design, it simply cannot accommodate the cells grouped that way. Using my 2L soda bottle canopy, it was a tight fit, I may have to go 3L for more room.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to continue flying the A123 pack yet. Mainly because I have yet to send my Cellpro 4S charger back for reflash. But so far I like it. Bob took a quick test spin on my bird as well. I will let him chime in on his experience.

Well... I can say I was a little a suprised at the power these had but as rcboosted says you could FEEL the bird was heavier and it was effecting performance. The old Align 315 carbons (real carbon fiber not the solid black ones) did help a lot with performance.

But in the end I will be sticking to Lipo's but for you guys looking for cheap packs and sport flying it might be something to try! You will need a charger that can do them though!

Maan i missed the thread, didnt see it at all and i was scaning for more info on A123's.

Well it doesn't sound too bad to me, never was expecting lipo performace but this info is deffinatly encouraging to me, its only that i'm low on £'s right now that i havn't tryed A123's already.

So rcboosted cant u charge the A123s with the Cellpro-4s but monitor and dissconect when cells reach 2.6V ? I have the Cellpro-4s charger too and was hoping i could do the above.

I'm thinking if the A123 cells are quite good but not as good as i hoped i may have a few A123 packs and 2 lipos, use the A123s to warm up and pratice and the lipos at the end for more fun.

Peace

They definitely can't compete with lipo in the weight department. But running my woodies at 3100rpm helped a lot. For charging with cellpro 4S, you can't charge them without a balance connector. Which means I can't just plug it into the deans and charge the 4S A123 as 3S lipo. I got my Cell pro back this Friday though. So I will be able to give more reports. For now, let me just copy/paste what I Wrote in another thread.

After getting 10 more flight out of them, I like them. Yes they are heavier, but the extra headspeed makes up for it. For my sport flying (sort of aggressive) I find them more than adequate. I actually miss the HS when I go back to my lipo. But of course if you fly with a 4S lipo set up you'll be even happier. For now, they handle pretty much the same as my 3S lipos, you just have to remember to give it a little more pitch at times.

Yeah well i'm gonna wire up balance plugs when i get them anyway so i should be able to charge them on the Cellpro and pull the plug at 2.6v yes ?
I'm in the UK so dont know if its worth the hassle of trying to get my 2 Cellpros updated.

Please keep the info coming, i'm hoping to order some in the next week or so.

No you can't just pull the plug at 2.6v. (Actually 3.6v) The cell pro simply cannot charge them that way. If you plug in a 4S connector, it detects 4 cells. Then it'll start pumping 4.2V into each cell. That will surely damage the A123. Remember the lipos and A123 charge using constant voltage. So if you're going to stick with cellpro, definitely get it updated. But I understand it'll be probably a 3 week downtime for you. 1 week to ship, 1 week turn around, 1 week return ship.

Oh well, thats messed up my plans compleatly. Thx for the info.
Is the upgrade free ? what about posting back to the customer, do we pay shipping or them ?

Thx

In the US, it's flat rate $12 each. You ship on your dime, they ship back on theirs. (included in the $12) Not sure about UK. Email Howard, their tech guy on fma, he should be able to tell you. He's the one who sent me this info.
