View Full Version : Quick of Japan EP8
Hi guys
I noticed that there isnt much talk about the EP8 on Helifreak, but there is a lot on other boards.
Im just wondering how many "Freaks" actually have an EP8 but havent had cause to post about it?
Post what you got! and pics too
Mine:
EP8 SP
Rotorworks SE G10 chassis
Hacker A30 10XL, 15 tooth
CC HV45
Align Trex600 voltage reg
401 gyro
Futaba 9254 tail
Hitec HS85MG on cyclic
Flightpower EVO20 3s 2150, wired as 6s.
HS about 2350rpm
Just hovering time 7 mins, uses bout 1500mah.

I have an EPv2 EX.
Quick 3025-10 motor, 17t pinion for now.
Quick 50A Opto ESC
3 x HS81 cyclic servos, now metal gear after stripping all three. :)
GY401 gyro
S9254 for tail
Upgraded flybar control to cage
400m Woodies
QJ16 gear
Right now flying with 5S 2100 TP packs. I have a 5S TP Extreme 2070 pack and a 2S+3S Polyquest 2100 and 2500 setup.

boom, Boom, BOOM
:)
I really like mine.
Lol!
Ready to maiden mine tomorrow in its new form.
So tomorrow will be the first experience with the Rotorworkz SE chassis, switched back to bigger paddles (forget the brand) and Im running 6v lipo powered servo's now  , regulated to 5v for the tail.
So i think she will be VERY responsive.
Fingers crossed that all go's well...

dude good luck and keep the pics coming let us know what you think
Maiden went well.
Very responsive on cyclic, even though I have 30% expo dialed in.
Big cyclic throw now.
Im getting a slight quick glitch that makes the cyclic twitch to the RHS for a split second.
Never done that before, have a ferrite ring on ESC, RX is as far back in the chassis as it will go, and its underneath as well....
Low frequency tail wag, I knew that my tail servo rod length was a stab in the dark lol.
Its great that the tail servo is now mounted within the chassis......BUT it would be REALLY nice if I knew what length to make the tail servo rod lol.
The problem is that it will differ depending on HS.
Sigh....
Will have to see if I can find an adjustable setup.
I have the rubber grommets installed on the servo mounting points on cyclic.
I think this was a bad move, as there is too much movement available.
Meaning that the servo's rock a bit in their mounts.
So Im going to have to take the side frames off and remount the servo's rigid.
Undo all the wiring, yada yada....
Im tired and grumpy, work sucks lol

here's some more pics of the EP8's one is a streatched rotorworkz "SE" SP and the other my stock version of the EX. the EX is now a in a RotorWorkz "SE" frame much like Jimbo's they are both running 5S lipos and the SP has 2000rpm on the head and the EX runs at 3K :).
I love this Heli and like that it's such an underdog...nothing like going to a field and everyone wondering what it is...
If the EX looks familiar it's because I did the build manual for Harold with this Heli.

Hi all.
Just a quick question, I have been flying my EP8 powered by a ELE A36-10L outrunner.
Has anybody had any experience with this motor ... good or bad?
Reason I ask is that after 5 hours mine failed, the rear bearing collapsed and the motor locked up because of it. Was only hovering about 3 feet high at the time, so was no drama but rather disappointing. I can get new bearings easily enough, but am not sure that I want to spend the $$ if this is common.
Given that the rear bearing on this motor is 5mm by 8mm by 2.5mm which is the same size as output bearings on smaller servos. This makes me think that perhaps bearing failure maybe common.
Thanks and bye for now.

Gorn, the phasing on your head looks REALLY BAD!
The flybar should be in line with the upper swash plate balls. You have like 30 degrees of phasing there and thats gotta be causing issues in flight (Aileron to elevator interactions).

On my EX the washout arms go the opposite direction. Looking at the arm, the swash connection is to the right, the flybar connection to the left.
There is some angle to the swash to mixer linage, but not that much.

And there is no anti-rotation collar. I think that is a photo of a build-in-progress.

More than likely correct, we are quick to jump though are we not? lol.

So how crashworthy do you guys find these birds ?
How do the alu frames, head and tail hold up ?
A typical T450 crash strips the main gear, which is no biggie at $4 each, but the EP8 main gear is $25 here. Do you find you have to replace the main gear on most crashes ?
Has anyone tried using cut-down Swift woodies as a cheaper main blade replacements ? Would that be feasible ?

I had mine tip over and didn't hit TH fast enough (landed nose in far away and it rolled over).
Main gear was fine. Both blades toast, flybar was an interesting shape, spindle was OK, I did throw a head link and managed to lose one of the flybar seesaw screws/bushing/bearing, but that may have happened prior to.
I haven't stress tested the frames yet, but I have an EX with 2mm frames rather than the SP 1.5mm frames. Harold at Helicopter Hobbies has G10 frames available and Rotorworkz CF frames for the SP, and is supposed to have some for the EX later.

Terry,
Thank you for the info. Not that I wish it upon you, but if you do ever "stress test" the frames I would be very interested to hear the outcome.

I hope to never do that, but I am realistic. :)

Do you folks see an oportunity to have a Quick of Japan board here?
If so lend some support to the suggestion section where I have posted same.
Cheers.
