View Full Version : CX2 Tx Batts - are Nicads ok?

The CX2 Tx takes 4 AA sized cells = 6v
Can I use Nicads instead = 4.8v
or would this much lower voltage cause loss of control?
Anyone tried it yet?

SHould work fine, a fully charged NiCd is more than 1.5v, so you will still be at 6v+ when they are full charged.

Standard alkaline batteries are 1.5VDC per cell. NiCds are 1.2VDC per cell. It should work fine, but probably wont last as long.. the benefit is they are rechargeable..........

Rick,
I tried some old NiCds I had and the TX wouldn't fire up. The batteries are several years old, but each tested over 1.2v.
However, even the included alkalines seem to last pretty long.

Hmmm, I wonder what the cut off voltage is for this Tx. Does it give a warning ?(can't remember if the instruction manual said anything).

Rick,
The manual says an alarm will sound if the voltage drops below 4.5v.

Don, the open circuit voltage on a battery does not mean much in reality. To properly test batteries, they must have a nominal load. A perfect example is a device with a battery has a low voltage indication. You shut it off for a while then power it back on and it runs for a few minutes before the alarm occurs again.
I cant say what that nominal load should be without further research but it should be easy to find on the internet. Let me know if you cant find anything and I will look into it more.

Hi Dan,
I retested the batteries under load and they appear nominal but the TX won't fire up. The manual states that an alarm will sound if the voltage drops under 4.5v so I don't know. :dontknow

Go with 2500 mah ni mh rechargables. Get way more TX time from them, voltage is not a problem. Unless you use good quality alkalines, strong ni Mh the way to go. I have these in all my TX's...helis, a/c.

Great idea Ray!
I've actually got a bunch of NiMh AAs I could try. But the alkalines have been lasting for me so I haven't tried them yet.
