Default A new Blade 400 owner.

I went to the LHS to get the parts for the SR. Started talking to the owner If he knew about the new Blade 450 and out of nowhere he said he would give me a great deal on a PNP Blade 400. I said I was not really looking for a new bird right now but told him I he threw out a price you never know. He said $200 OTD ( he knocked $97 off). As soon as he said that my phone rang and my wife called I told her the deal and se said GET IT!. So not wanting to make my wife angry I got it. I was going to get a 450 size heli pretty soon but I could not pass this up. Plus he has all the parts for the Blade 400 in stock. So now I have something else to crash.
I will fly it stock for a while but I am sure I will upgrade it sooner than later.
I have a Spartan Quark in my spare box that will find a new home on the 400 ASAP . I do plan to put hitec HS-65mg on the cyclic. What is a good replacement for the tail servo (will use the Quark when I upgrade.). What are some other tips you can offer?

I like the 9257, but it will require boom mounting. The Hitech HSG-5084 is also a good choice if you want to mount in stock location.
You will need to either upgrade your ESC or run an external BEC if you run HS-65mg's and digital tail servo.
A set of t-rex 500 landing gear make for a much more stable learner bird.
Other than that, have a nice supply of extra main shafts, feathering shafts, blades, main blade and tail blade grips..

This thing has been giving me head aches since I got it. Setting up the Gryo was a pain. Finally got that dialed in ( had to cut the tail push rod to get it trimmed) Once I figured that out it was time to fly. So I thought. ESC shuts gets hot and shuts down after a minute or two of hovering. Gear mesh was a little tight. So I go to adjust it and the lock tite was so strong I sheared the bolts off. Went and got a new motor mount and tried again. Set the gear mesh correct and few again. Still shut down. Put a 30 amp ESC from another model that I know works and same thing. Bought a Castle BEC and put it in figuring that would fix it. Still shuts down after 1 - 2 minutes of hovering. Every thing checks out mechanically. The motor bearings seem fine as I spun it by hand when I had it out. There does not seem to be a lot of resistance in the drive train. Gear mesh and belt tension are correct.
My guess is the motor is bad. I was thinking maybe the servos would be putting to much strain on the system as you can not set the end points on the gryo, but with the BEC I think that would have eliminated that problem. Batteries come down pretty warm but only use about 700mah.
Any other Ideas? I am weighting on a call back from Horizon support and see what they say.

Horizon called back and said it was most likly the motor and is sending one out to me to replace it on there dime. It stinks when things do not work the way they should the first time, but Horizon did a good job of taking care of it.( hopfully)

I use T500 canopy mounts and grommets. It was a great mod. It was inexpensive and it is much easier to mount and remove the canopy.

Oh... and you might want to take a look at THIS. Sly has compiled a great deal of B400 wisdom.

Horizon sent me a new motor. Put it in last night and flew it today. Fixed! 5 mins of idle up hover and it came down luke warm and no shut down. I am keeping the 30 amp esc and the Castle BEC in it, just because it is already in there. Looking forward to flying some circuts with it.

Just an update. I added a Spartan Quark gryo with a HSG-5084 and put JR DS 287mg on the cyclic. I thought that the 400 flew well before Now I know what high quality electroics do for it. It is simply amazing how well this thing flys now.
