On that subject, anybody got a good link on the deal w/ JIT screwdriver head? Slightly different shape of phillips, some helis but not all have it, where to find one, how to spot the difference, etc.

RJR tools has a set of nice JIS screwdrivers that work well on the phillips-like screws that come from Asian products. Much better than actual US Phillips spec'ed ones. And shipping is free to boot!. And they are HF advertisers too.
Here is a link to their JIS drivers. http://www.rjrcooltools.com/jis.cfm

wow, thanks for pointers.
related question: Most of the cross heads I can think of off hand are servo arm mounting screws. Anything to know about best fit on those, as a family?
thx agin

You can find these type screws in a lot of places. Like the OP mentioned, the screws that hold the servo cases together, the screws used in Futaba Transmitter cases (maybe others manufacturer's too), a lot of glow engines--almost anything made in Asia.
One thing to realize, is that the JIS screw driver head is really different than the standard Phillips head screw driver head that we use here in the States. Using a standard Phillips will often work on JIS screws, but it tends to slip.
I read somewhere that slipping out of the screw head was actually a "feature" in the case of Phillips (for Phillips standard screw heads)--I think it was to prevent twisting off the head of the screw by using too much torque. --note, I just saw that I read this on the RJR tool site, see the link I gave above.
But in addition the Phillips driver head really don't fit the JIS screws, and that is an extra problem.

Based on some of the detailed diagrams in the links provided, it looks like JIS would work just fine w/ standard philips.
Those links were mighty tempting...
