I was looking for an easy way to help my family learn to fly. Reading all the documents..etc made it sound like getting a suitable radio to use as a buddy box would require a special make/model.

Fact is I have a older XF622 radio that actually WORKS!!!

In System Mode put Trainer in p-link, connect the JR buddy cord between the radios. When you're flying and want the trainee to take over just have them match your throttle stick setting, then push the left rocker up and hold... your buddy is now flying!!!

Lessons Learned:
1. Things are often simpler than they look.
2. Don't believe everything the "expert" at the LHS says. They often don't know what they are talking about.

the LHS guy was mumbling on about the TX units having different "crystals" and "frequencies"..etc.. that was my tipoff he was clueless..

Hint to LHS workers: If you don't know just say that you don't know.

Of course the bottom line at a LHS is all to painfully the bottom line. If they can sell you a radio strictly for use as a buddy-box, they still sold a radio and made a profit.

very true...but I had the XF622 laying around the house.
It was origionally going to be my heli radio until I realized how many George Washington's I had buzzing around. That's when I went back to the finance committee and convinced her it was in our best interest to protect our investment with a control system that couldn't easily be disrupted by the evil empire! (sorry..too many role playing games as a child  ).

With all the "Should I buy a DX?" threads floating around... that may be the best answer yet.

Jermo,
The manual is vague about the buddy Tx concerning trim in p-link mode.
It appears that all mixing is used from the Dx7 and only the stick inputs are used from the trainees Tx, do the trims on the slave radio function or is that also set in the master TX?
I just got my Dx7 and it is on the last few hours of the recommended initial 16 hour charge.
I haven't had a chance to program it and try the trainer function yet,
my buddy box will be a JR6102.

They trims on the "student" do function, and you want them centered.

Thank you for the info.
I discovered that the trainee radio must be set to PPM

ROFL... I'm constantly amazed at the lack of knowledge LHS employees have about the business they choose to make a living.

hey everyone ,i was wondering if the dx-7 could be used for a buddy box for the blade cp radio? I'm trying to teach my cousin to fly and figured that would be the safest way. it sounds like I need a JR buddy cord ... but would it work without binding, since the Blade is stock?
