View Full Version : Mimic fixed pitch on a CP heli with settings?

Is it possible to mimic a fixed pitch type of setup such as the MSR on a CP heli such as the MCPX or the Blade 400 by manipulating the settings on the controller?? For example.. would it work to set the pitch curve to a FLAT LINE number that would set the heli's blades at a set pitch and use a linear type of throttle curve so when the heli spools up it acts like the MSR in the sense that as you raise the throttle, you get your lift, and as you lower the throttle you get a slower decent?? Am I making any sense??

Thinks makes sense in my brain...

It would work with the rotors at 2-3° positive but the flight characteristics would blow, and not like the mSR does. It would be unresponsive in low throttle ranges and really doesn't seem to have much of a progression into high RPM so it may be more balloony than setup traditionally for a CP. You can mess around with it, I've noticed rpm doesn't seem to increase (at least you can't hear it) above 60 or so in the throttle curve. What are you looking to achieve with this?

A friend of mine has a Blade 400 that is basically scaring the hell out of him.. I want to be able to basically dumb down the scaryness of it and make it more like his MSR... I think he is capable of flying it but he has had a few bad experiences with it that has basically turned him off from it.. I have the MCPX and keep telling him to get one as the pucker and fear factor, although still present, are minimized tremendously.. I personally have no intention of moving to bigger heli's myself based on cost and my wife..

It will still fly like a CP, nothing short of really expensive stabilization electronics will make it easy. I would advise him to find good noob settings (low throw with expo) and start there or get a sim. An mSR's stability comes from the blade shape and 45° flybar phasing and neither can be replicated by Tx settings on a CP.

Add more weights to the flybar on his 400, lots of EXPO and tell your friend to fly the thing.

Also, if his fear is due to finical reasons or disintrest in wrenching on it then the mCP may be his best bet short of staying with FP's

I fully agree....

There isn't anything that can be done to make it fly like an mSR.But,if you'll ship it to me,I'll be happy to experiment with it:lol:

He could install Flymentor on the 400. It does make it easier to fly, well, unless the setup is wrong. (Learned that one the hard way...)

Have you seen this......

A trex 450 (clone) with a Multiplex Funcopter head

The guy who came up with it is great at tinkering and developing mods

The benefits are:
- Very stable FP design
- Strong Head design, lower parts count, will take a few crashes
- The size of a 450, get over the fear factor

Costs about $60 - $70 on top of the donor heli, I'm sure it would work on a B400, it only needs some basic drilling of one of the FC head parts to make it fit on a Trex,

I bought the bits just for fun, still haven't got around to finishing it (like all of my projects)
I figured that I've got different planes for different moods, 3D, park, Ducted fan, gliders, indoor, etc, then why shouldn't I have a heli for relaxed flying around

This is like putting a parachute on a baseball to make it fly slower like a beach ball. Why bother flying a CP if you don't want accurate response?

Tell your friend to check and/or tone down his negative and positive pitch extents (check them both, DX6i requires each to be set separately, with stick down, then again with stick UP)

Actually with a normal CP (ie: not the mCP) the Tx is setup for 3servo 120°CCPM and pitch in both directions is set by the single swash mix PIT percentage. If his is set to say 70% to achieve +/-10° pitch then he could lower it to 50% or so to get less pitch overall as you suggest and increase the resolution of the available pitch to soften the up/down response. He can also turn down ELE and AIL swash mix to decrease cyclic range but D/R does te same thing for that. The mCP does all the mixing internally.
