Hello,

I discovered today that the U-bec i was using was killing my Rx range on my Lepton. After 5-6 metters the servos was already hesistating and i'm using a Futaba 146iP receiver. With a rx batt i got at least 40m for the same result (and a lot more with a 149DP receiver). It's explaining some strange behaviour i had during stall turns with the heli not stoping the rotation when i asked for it or stopping before i put back the tail rotor stick to center.
I was using this U-Bec:

I decided to test the coolflight system U-bec i always had on my Voyager E and i discovered the Rx range was also lower than expected. I removed the connector from the rx and pluged a Rx batt and no better result. I then disconected the U-bec from main batt and suddenly all the servos was moving OK. So it's coming from the U-bec.

I suppose some of you have trouble-free U-Bec. What are you using? I'm searching for some 6V capable U-bec.

I have used the koolflightsystem UBEC's without any issuse for years. I believe ther is also some issues with 35mhz and some bec's. Are you using 35mhz?

I'm using 72Mhz. The only thing on my Voyager E is that i can't power the U-bec without powering the ESC too (Hacker master). So when i unplug the main batt i shut down ESC and U-bec. So i don't know exactly if the sudden better result comes from the U-bec or the ESC. But at this moment both the ESC and U-bec are disconnected from the Rx.

Anyway i think i will put a 149DP receiver on my Lepton. The range will be a lot higher, we got the space to fit it and the Lepton price is worth it. But i will need a good U-bec too.

What is the difference between a U-BEC and a BEC? Im confused, does not take much but hey...

Medusa is a BEC? I use my LIPO for my ESC to power up my servos.

U-BEC separate battery? Like the Trex 600?

Thanks!!

The UBEC is a type of BEC made by koolflightsystems.com . It is named the "Ultimate BEC" or UBEC for short.

We often use U-bec word to talk about switching type BEC. The true U-bec is one of them, probably one of the firsts.
This kind of device is capable of a very good efficiency when moving down the batt voltage to the 5 or 6V your Rx need. A standard linear BEC is generating a lot of heat and so it could not be used with a too high input voltage or a large Amp need. Some ESC are now including switching type of becs like some Jazzs by example. One of the downside of switching type Becs is the electrical/electronical noise they are creating. A lot. It depends of how they are made and seured about this.
My problem is my Switching bec on the Lepton is very bad on this point. Very dangerous in fact with a PCM receiver that is hiding small glitchs.

I'm still waiting for more opinions on switching type becs that are safe. Does anyone use the Hyperion one?

Stay tuned as a new switching BEC will soon be on the market from a well established company.

You are making it very mysterious Adrian...

Adrain, when will it be available?

Do y'all run a ferrite ring around the ubec servo wire?

I know that I may catch some flack for it, but I don't run a ferrite ring anywhere on my heli. Been running electric helis for 3 years or so and haven't ever had one on any of them. I have also always ran PCM and take note on where I mount my electronics.

Never had any glitching problems and I'm sure I won't once I get my Spektrum module for my 9303.

I have never used one with an add on bec.

The reason I ask is I was having some radio interference with my gyro. At one point I put one on. It made it worse. It was really strange. I eliminated the bec as the problem by just running the servos off of a small 4.8v receiver battery. I had read some other posts about people having some troubles with their bec's. I guess I was curious to know if anybody else put a ferrite ring on the bec lead. While I am at what about the gyro lead? That was my problem. I had it too close to the esc and was getting some noise. I have moved the esc and solved that problem.

A ferrite ring is always a good thing on ESC with integrated bec and switching type becs. Some noise is always going on the cable. Right now i putted a ferrite ring, i just soldered longer wires to move the U-bec far of the receiver and i twisted this cables. Not tested yet. But it should be a lot better.

I am sorry my post is not that clear. I am refering to the bec. I already have one on my esc.
