Just finished up the razor and a new paint job so I had to show you guys. Thanks to InsaneAirFX for the Lexan canopy which turned out great. Painting from the inside makes for a great finish and saves a lot of time.

Flying with the following
DX7
GY611
9451s on cyclic
Tango 45-08
CC85
10s EVO3700s
V-Blades, paddles, and tails

I was doing my best to make everything as light and fast as possible while still maintaining an acceptable flight time. You may see in the photos I moved some of the electronics up closer to the main shaft. Not sure if it will make a difference but it can't hurt to try. I can't wait for a little better weather to see how she performs.

very cool canopy job - I dig that!!
I see you are using the DX7 - I just got mine and this will be my first model with the DX7 - going to put down the trusty Futaba gear for a little while and take the new 2.4 tech. for a test drive.

Hey, same here.. just got a new DX7 to try out. I'll be putting it in an Ion though (after testing it in smaller/cheaper heli... hehe) Can't wait to see how it handles.

Cool paint-job. Need to save up some cash to get the Razor.

sounds good - I am just going to go with the DX7 in the Razor - I hear great things about it and know people flying it in big Nitro Helis. and big planks. I figure if its handling the vibration of glow, etc. and - it wil be fine in a mid-sized Razor. From the shop I order from, they can't keep them in stock.

I always wondered how well the batteries fit and if they need any kind of insulation from the carbon surrounding the batteries?
Looks really nice by the way :glasses2:

Has everyone gotten the FG canopy from MA?

Just got my canopy today, (#46) finally a face for my new friend :D.

Now if I can just find some time to paint it

Mike,

Very nice neat looking build and electronic installation mate. I really like your idea to get as much of the CG up top. It should roll like it's on a lathe!

I see you've wrapped a piece of velcro around your gyro sensor. Not a bad idea as I have seen some gassers and nitro heli's spit these off, and of course the end result is not too good. This is because all that vibration and oily mess can destroy the gyro tape over time. However, I have never seen a large electric heli lose one. Not one that the surfaces have been roughened and cleaned with with a little rubbing alcohol (Vodka will do in a pinch an it's a good excuse to have some in stock) and have used the stock Futaba double sided mounting strips. I never wrap mine but I do admit to giving it a gentle jiggle before each flight just to make sure it's still firmly attached. If you do wrap them, just make sure the wrap is real loose so it does not effect the gyro sensitivity. I have loosened a few of these tight wraps in the field for a few guys and it made a big, positive difference in tail response.

Don't really like clear windscreens, they kind of disappear for me. I find that red kind of goes black out of the sun as well. With my 'old' eyes, I'd probably paint the windscreen fluro pink or yellow (from the inside). Metallic silver or gold would look nice though.

Also, I'd think about adding a few air slots in the lower front windscreen and at the front bottom of you canopy to get a little more airflow over things, esp your esc and batteries. I'm a bit of an airflow junkie and use this plus 3-12v pc fans on my Ion-x; one 50mm one blowing over the motor, one 50mm one over the esc, and one 40mm one in front blowing over the batteries. I hook them in series (so they are like one big 36v fan) and wire them into my esc leads with 2mm bullets. This is probably overkill for your Razor set-up but it does make a big (~20 deg F) diff in my Ion over the summer months. The 3 fans only draw about 0.125 amps.

It looks like you are using an align bec. I hope it's the new 6 amp one since the old 3 amp bec might struggle with your excellent, but power hungry, digital servos.

I'm not sure how you have hooked up your motor/esc leads. I cannot quite make out whether you have just soldered them together or what. The heatshrink looks like it's just laying over these leads and has not been shrunk yet. I have used 4mm bullet connectors on my tango/hv85 esc motor/esc leads. Those 10 gauge HV85 leads are a real pain to fit into a 4mm bullet, but it can be done by trimming the esc leads, like a blunt pencil and press fitting them in with a good hot solder job. I put the bullets in a vice and use the blow-torch attachment on my portable welder butane to heat it up, fill it with solder and press the lead into it adding enough heat to sweat the CC lead's solder and I end up with a very good join.

Lastly, that common black wire that goes between each battery pack (pos to neg) is crying out for a spark arrestor imop. If you have lightning reflexes and a good eye, you may be able to make the final connections without a big spark, but if you want to avoid it, have a look at the previous thread on 'Precharge ...'.

Mike, I hope you find some of these comments useful and good luck on your maiden.

Best cheers,

Tom C
