I'm kinda new to electrics and I've seen people talk about inrunner/outrunner motors but i never bothered to ask...are they brushless only or can they be brushed too and why would one be better than the other?

The terms apply to brushless only, at least in the model world.

Inrunner, the coils are part of the outer casing, and the magnets are attached to the shaft which spins inside the motor.

Outrunner, the coils are in the middle of the motor and the magnets attach to the outer casing, which rotates.

SO if you hold the motor and rotate the shaft, if the outer casing turns with the shaft, it is an outrunner. The converse isn't always true, as the Align 430L and XL motors for the Trex 450 are outrunners, but there is an outer casing that doesn't turn, with the turning casing inside that. :)

For good info on outrunners check out GoBrushless.com or StrongRC.com Both have manulas and kits on making your own brushless outrunner motors.
