First Look at the OS 50 Hyper.

I went to a fun fly this past weekend in Albany GA. Met some of the guys from on-line and had a great time. The one thing that really impressed me was how well the OS50 Hyper was doing. They were doing some pretty heavy duty 3D and the motor wasn’t bogging at all. Lanny Baker told me that running this motor with a Muscle Pipe II was a dream. Tuning was extremely simple compared to his old OS50.

I spent some time trying to get my TT50 Pro to run with a Muscle Pipe II, I thought we had it figured out by using a regulator and check valve, but when I got home it ran like crap again. Thanks for all the help guys but it didnt work! Looks Like Hyper Time !!!

My new OS50 Hyper came in yesterday, and I figured I would wait until I do my CCPM conversion on my Raptor. Well that little Blue Headed Devil kept calling my name so this morning I plugged it in to my Raptor.

Installation was pretty simple, I used the OS motor mount that came with my Raptor and it bolted right in. I had one problem with the Carbon frame stiffener hitting the head. I shaved it down with a dremel and it fit perfectly. The head looks like it will dissipate the heat much better than the old square types and you also get the cool blue bling factor as well.

The instruction manual stated that for break in run it slightly rich for the first few flights. Yahoo that’s a whole lot better than 5 or 6 tanks getting light on the skids.
I turned the main out 2 turns and left the slow speed where it was, cranked it up and did some hovering around the front yard, it was pumping out the smoke but sounded pretty good. I use a GV1 for my head speed and its set at 1800 in normal. I am also running 30% CoolPower heli fuel. I set it down after the fuel level hit the header tank and felt the back plate, it almost felt cool compared to my other motor.
I decided to hover one more tank full before I started pushing the motor to see how it feels. Well after 10 or 15 seconds it died, I refired it and it died again, the back plate was still real cool. Can you say GLOWPLUG, the OS8 that came with it was DRT better known as Dead Right There. Changed it out and back running like a dream.

I leaned the motor up a few clicks and went to IDL1 to see how it liked 1875 for a head speed. No problems, sounded great and was real responsive. Next I did a punch out from the ground, Man this thing has almost twice the climb out of my TT50.
I think the combination of 30%, MPII, and the OS50 Hyper is one that cant be beat!

I heard some rumors about bearings being the same as the old 50, but I think heat is what was killing the old 50’s as they didn’t really have a good carb on them. This thing really runs cool, and has Gobs of power, the 60L carb has a massive 10mm throat on it. Fuel economy is not a strong point, I lost about 3 minutes on a tank at hover so I’m guessing a little more in forward flight and even more in 3D mode.

I’ll keep everyone posted on the progress this motor makes, and I have a couple of more reviews to do over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for more great info (at least I hope its great).

Thanks for reading

I have one too in my Falcon SE III. This engine is really strong!!! And I haven't Muscle pipe on that yet!!! Next upgrade!!!!

It's true for the consumstion of fuel!!! It's à little hard on that!!!

Thanks for you article!!! :)

Craig, did you pull the backplate off and look inside the motor? I have seen motors straight out of the box with metal shaveings and other motor ruining particals in there. Hope you checked it out. Good luck with the little Hyper and good job on doing the review! :glasses2:

Mine drinks fuel very quickly and it doesn't like 15% very much. I have to twiddle it through the transition from idle to high and then it runs like a charm.

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and go to the costlier 30% after I finish up three more jugs of the green stuff.

I really like mine. I run it at 2000 or 2100 RPM, since with standard Raptor 50 gearing (85T), that puts the Hyper right around the max power RPM (which I can't remember at the moment).

Don't run it with 15% oil, the manual states 18% MINIMUM. Lean runs and not enough oil can cause the bearings to go prematurely, and did with a friends when he used regular 15% airplane fuel.

My hyper runs great on 15% nitro w/ 18% oil (80/20 Synth-Castor)
I'm sure 30% would have more power but I cant justify the cost right now

I'm running mine on CoolPower 15% (17% oil). I have noticed it doesn't come through the midrange transition as smoothly and doesn't make the power of the 30%, but flies fine for anything short of hard 3D.

Mine runs great at 2000 rpm and 30% Coolpower. I'm wondering if I should get a Muscle Pipe II after reading this thread!

Mine hyper 50's run excellent.
I changed the gearing for the optional 8.72:1 and run Idle up 2 @ 1950 swinging sab 620"s.
Monster power and hard to bog it down.
