Default Blade 400 newbie

Read all the posts on gyro and tail servos/gyro for the 400. Question I have...is this something I "NEED" to do to progress? Or will the stock setup be ok for basic hovering and initial flight training? I consider myself a newbie but do have a good understanding of the concepts. I'm not opposed to upgrading if it's the right thing to do from the get go.

I leaned to hover and began forward flight with the stock setup.once I started flying with some speed is when I started to upgrade..first the tail servo, then the gyro, then the cyclic s..then the trex 450 pro...

No you don't need to upgrade. The only real drawback for learning on this heli is the quality of the cyclic servos. You'll strip them very easily, and be rebuilding them every time you so much as look at it wrong.

As long as you don't mind rebuilding them when you crash though, no need to upgrade just to learn how to hover.

The stock set-up will work fine for the basics. The Blade 400's I've flown all had issues holding the tail with the stock gyro, but it's definitely not unflyable. As Rotormonkey already mentioned, the stock servo gears strip easily so get used to replacing those. It will serve you pretty well for learning, and parts for the 400 are cheap so it doesn't hurt the wallet as much to crash.

Once you move beyond hovering and forward flight, you'll probably want to upgrade the servos and the gyro, or move to a different heli. I had problems with the tail when I started working on turns, and I also had cyclic servo gears strip in flight. I replaced the cyclics with Hi-Tec 65 servos, and a Futaba 401 gyro along with a Futaba tail servo (don't remember which one off hand). Made for a much more responsive and predictable heli, but I will say that the old, used Trex 450 V2 that I replaced it with was much better. Point is, I'd use the Blade as is for now but instead of spending the money to upgrade it I'd get something different down the road.
