Weird and somewhat strange question, but i cant find how one goes about starting their heli eg shaft start, pull start?

I cant imagine you would want to pull start you nitro and get the rotor to idle at 2000+ RMP

so how does one do it,

i have a trex 450 and was just thinking about possibly upgrading to a rappy but yeah ...

Nitro helis are normally started with an external starter that is equipped with a start shaft. The heli has a centrigual clutch, so the rotor blades will not turn till the clutch engages at about 2000 rpm and above on the motor.

The helis that have gasoline engines, a good number of them have a pull start. Some are removable once the engine is started.

I would suggest before you venture into nitro or gas powered helis. Go a flying field where they are being flown and observe.

Thanks for the response david!

do you think a direct drive from the motor to the main gear without a clutch is a bad idea? and have a small onboard electric motor to turn the shaft.

not specifically for a raptor but just in general

what if you could sit the heli on a sort of starter box that could turn the shaft via an electric motor) then once the nitro motor has started you could turn the electric motor off and you could do this remotly so you dont have to be near it...

Would a direct drive to the main gear be dangerous in a crash situation?

Thanks

It would be dangerous in any situation. Since you have to carry a heli out to a flight line, you really want a clutch in the equation keeping the motor from turning anything else until you intend it to do so. At some point you HAVE to be near the heli when it's running.

The other problem with a direct drive is that you'd be hard pressed to find a motor that gives high enough torque and low enough RPM.
