I am curious as what JR servo's to use in the 450 Trex.
Everyone is saying to use Hitec hs65's for the swash and s9650 fro the tail but i want to know what jr servos are comparable to this and if they are comparably priced or not.
Thanks for any replies.

DS285 for cyclics and the 3400G on the tail.

I totally agree.........

Hard to beat that setup..................

Other than having to replace gear sets when crashing.

That's why most people run Hitec HS65MG cyclic servos. These are metal gears and are much harder to strip.

The JR DS3400G is a superb tail servo.

Are there any metal gears available for the DS 285's.

There are gears that MAY fit, but no one has actually put them, AFAIK.

I'm sorry, what is AFAIK ? Which gears are you talking about ? I bought some more nylon gears and they work great, it would just be so much better if I didn't have to rebuild the servos after a crash.

AFAIK ( As Far as I Know)

There is a thread on metal gears for the DS285s, but there are two sets that MAY work. One set is expensive, the other set is crazy (like $40).

But I don't know of anyboyd yet that has actually gotten them

JR doesn't list eithe rgear set for the 285s, but the nylon gears for teh 285s fit other servos, and the metal gears fit those, so they MAY fit the 285s.

Or you can just use HS65MGs because they work great and have metal gears, and are pretty cheap.

But the 3400G is awesome on the tail. :)

Why hasn't anyone tried these metal gears ? Price ? maybe they won't work properly? glitching? Is there something about digital servos that don't work with metal gears ?

metal gears from a jr s241 should fit. If i strip a gear I plan on using these. only reason I haven't tried these is no stripped gears yet.

pn - JRPSG241MG you should be able to find the gearsets in the $17-$18 range

no problem with metal gears on digital servos. 3400g is a digital w/ metal gears. I'm using the ds285's and 3400G on a mini-titan, only 1 good crash on it though no damage done to the servos.

I have a 100$ set of the DS285s that is sitting unused at this point...I bought them just because I thought my new V2 didn't deserve any less. But jeez...those things strip if you just look at them too hard, and it's impossible (as of right now) to find replacement gears.

IMHO, I would unequivocally stick with the HS-65MGs on the cyclic. I didn't notice one bit of difference in their performance vs. the digitals, and they also they fit and install into the TRex frame a lot cleaner, plus the included servo arms are a lot easier to work with.

JR can talk about "giving your TRex that locked-in feel" all they want....But my heli definitely doesn't feel very "locked-in" when it's not flying because I'm too busy removing, repairing, re-installing, and re-wiring servos.

The metal 241 gears are a great replacement for only $20

i've been using 285's with 241 replacement metal gears for over a year now and i haven't had any issues.the only mod i had to do was slightly enlarge the hole of the gear that protrudes from the servo case(the one that the servo arm attaches to).it has a plastic liner easy to deal with.no glitching or stripped gears.and i did crash severely a couple of times.

Schuster and the others that have mentioned it are indeed correct. The item is the JRPSG241MG set of metal gears. It fits the 241, 281, and 285 if you go by the description of the nylon gear replacenemt set which is item JRPSG241.

I also agree with the "those things strip if you look at them too hard" comment as well as the impossible task it is to try and get the replacement nylon gearsets. Horizon still has them on backorder. I ordered three sets of the MGs from HeliDirect and have been using them for about a month now. Only issue I had is getting the output gear on the shaft was a bit tricky and required some finessing.

I have crashed twice just as hard as the last time I stripped the gears and I have suffered no ill effects on the servos. I can't say the same for my 401 gyro however as it has taken two hits and the last one was the one that did it in (guess where it was mounted). It's off to Hobby Services now for "repairs".
