My current set up on my CPP is BL main and Tail with the HH G90. Do I still need the 3-1? I'd like to eliminate the 3-1 if possible. With the HH gyro the 3-1 is disabled anyway. Anyone know?

My understanding is that if you have a BL main and tail motor with a HH gyro attached, you do not need the 3 in 1.

The functions of the 3 in 1 are:

1. BEC
2. Brushed ESC for tail motor
3. Brushed ESC for main motor
4. Some sort of Gyro.

If you have something to handle each one of these functions then you should be OK.

I do have one question though. With the BL tail and using the HH gyro, how does it fly? I hear with the BL tail set up it has a rough time while it spools up.

I could be wrong, so more input would still be helpful.

Thanks for your feedback.

I'm a noob so take this with more than a few grains of salt. Mine flys great IMO. Holds very very good. Better than any other setup I've tried. I haven't tried the BL+fan yet (will by this weekend). One thing I've noticed with the BL and HH is you have to have your gain dialed in. The "wag" you get from too much gain is multiplied with the BL. That is to say, if its too high and it starts to wag, the wag gets worse in seconds and can be irrecoverable. I bring my CPP up about 3-6" and look for the first sign of wag (you cant miss it with BL tail motor) drop and adjust. Head speed is low (I don't adjust in idle up) so its a quick twist and I'm off. Once its set your good to go for many flights unless you move it accidentaly or something. I always check before getting too far off the deck.

As far as spool up, with the left stick centered and the bird on the ground the ESC reads this as half throttle. Not an issue for me. I compensate with left stick left so it doesnt move while throttling up. As soon as you get light on the skids the HH kicks in and corrects the tail speed. I do have to hold left stick full left for the ESC to initialize . I'm a noob and the castlelink software for the Phoenix 10 won't run on my laptop (beware the .net problem) so I only got to set the ESC once, but there may be settings that can be adjusted to help with the issues. Maybe tricking the ESC as far as where half throttle is?

All in all, I like the Bl tail better than any I've tried. After the BL fan I don't think theres any tail config I haven't flown for the CPP other than a belt conversions.

I've tried the following:

Stock geared
GWS Geared
GWS Fan
DD GWS
DD Stock
Dual Stock
BL geared
BL DD

Sorry for going on but, I think the spool up issue (all be it small) is probably fixable by someone thats not as new as I am. I know there is a ton of programmable features on the ESC but I haven't been able to try them out. I can tell you this though, this is the only configuration that I've been able to run multiple packs through while doing constant "punches". All other configs fried the motors in short order. I did have to upgrade my packs tho. I'm using Custom RC 1000mah 15c and Thunder Power 1320 mah 20c for mine. The Brushless tail with the BL main is more than the stock 800mah 8 (10?)c battery can take. Max temps for the Main have been 115-130F , the tail 130F and the pack 115F. I'm too new to say what this all means but I haven't killed anything yet. Hope this helps!

Does the 3 in 1 do any mixing for the tail/main? (aside from the gyro aspect?)

Also, your #1 is a big one: battery elimination circuit for the receiver.

Honestly I do not know if the 3 in 1 uses any mixing for the tail / main.

Actually having the BEC is not that big of a deal because I would be willing to bet one of your BL (Brushless) ESC’s would have it built in. If you use the EFlite ESC suggested in the manual, then you already have the BEC.

Buzzkill, I hope you do not mind me asking you 2 more questions.

1. Are you using a separate Transmitter or the stock transmitter? If you are using a different Tx then I would be willing to bet you can get rid of the 3 in 1.

2. Which Brushless tail motor do you use? Which prop?

Thanks,

-Craig

I use the stock TX unfortunately.

I use the fiego 5300kv 12mm X 30mm

The props I us is the one that comes with the DD tail kit and thens theres an orange prop that has squared off ends (sorry I'm in my office and cant remember the numbers) I'll check when I get home for the prop #'s. I know there both GWS though.
