Piro Question: Is it normal to use slight cyclic to keep the heli stationary or is it an indication of a swash setup issue if the heli goes off in one direction during a piro?

Just asking, I've started flying boxes in my back yard doing piro's at the points and I note the heli drifts some which requires cyclic.

Hmmm... interesting question. When I piro I simply throw the left stick. But I'm sloppy. It's true that a piro does change the overall side force on the heli, so you will translate if you don't correct with cyclic, but I don't know if anyone actually does correct. The translation would tend to have the effect of making the heli fly in a small circle (if not corrected) rather than pivot cleanly around the main-shaft.

Jermo,

When flying Piro's, you'll giving full thrust in either direction to have the heli doing piro's.
But since the tailrotor does not really only counteract torque but blows sideways, if you steer the tail left or right, the heli will start to drift sideways.

Up to now, you might not have noticed this effect because you did not use big inputs on the tail.
Now that you use full deflection for piro's, you'll notice the effect. If you would increase the tail-deflection, you would notice it even more.

By the way, while talking on tail-rotor and it's effects...
What I had once, that upon applying full nose right, the heli would nick violently, upon full nose left, nothing such would happen.
Turned out to be too much tail-deflection, caused by too low Tail-RPM...
When turning the nose in one direction, I was increasing the pitch of the tailblades and would get in such angle-of-attacks of the blades, that they would start to induce torque on the whole heli. While hovering, the AoA wasn't that big to do anything and when turning the nose in the other direction, I decreased the AoA, only going little on the other side of zero, therefore no torque...

Cheers,

Daniel

Thanks guys, I'm working on collective managment and trying to spice things up for fun..ie piro's on the spots.. just noticing things now that I'm doing more :).
These lil birds are just made to fly :)
