I bought a 1st version that has never been flown with a brushless motor, everything but servos for a 100.00. Is there anything I should know or change on it. I would like to use the v2 gear.

V1 setup is fine if you ABSOLUTELY keep the tail OUT OF THE GRASS.
I flew a V1 for a long time, flying off of a cheap-0 WalMart "Welcom mat" and never had trouble with the gears at all. The guys around me flying the various belt upgrades had much more problems.
Anyway...

I was flying V1. I had multiple in flight failures of tail rotor drive. I than upgraded to V2, never knew i had a tail drive... no problems what so ever.

I have flown both versions, including majorly upgraded CNC belt tail drives and all, and the simplest and easiest was still my V1 with a brushless and a metal rotor head. I got more flights out of that thing. I always flew off a firm surface. Now I have an all cnc 3dX400 but I still think the V1 is a good heli. I think carbon fiber, wood, or fiberglass blades are the most useful upgrade on any Shogun. That makes the biggest difference in handling over the foam blades.

Oh yes, the foam blades are only good for a "test flight" to ensure nothing will break and cost more expensive blades. Other than that, never fly 'em.
