I am just curious, how do I know if a Brushed or Brushless motor is running too hot. My Old brushed motor would get pretty hot after running a hover for about 10min or so on my CPP, but not spit sizzling hot.
My new BL gets pretty warm but nothing too bad. I added another heat sink to it just to be on the safe side. Thanks guys.

From what I've read, 140 degrees F is about the hottest that's "safe" for electronics & motors. I would guess people would suggest even lower for better longevity.

I know people use those IR thermometers and are getting temps in the 115 -125 range and seem fairly happy...

BTW, 140F is uncomfortably hot to the touch. You can hold it, and it won't burn you, but it will get a grimace or scowl from you. ;)

i've got a heat sink on my motor and let me tell you, mine gets REALLY hot, too hot to touch let alone hold. this is because i have a 100% flat throttle because i do average 3D with it. it has a stock motor, i dun really care if i burn out my main motor cuz they're cheap, and really, for you to do any reasonable 3D with stock motor, you'll need to run 100% flat throttle curve, i will invest in a 2nd heat sink ASAP though.

cool, thanks a lot guys. Went out and picked up two heat sinks for each motor (2 on BL main, 2 on each tail motor). I hope that will keep em nice and cool. I also cut a bit of my windshield out sense I noticed the main motor stays cooler with out the canopy. Still looks nice and should provide some additional cooling.

mortificate, what kind of flying are you doing? if your going for 3D, i'd suggest you give dd tail a shot.

LOL, I am just learning. Started helis about 2 months ago and do most of my flying in my living room. Needless to say I have gotten REALLY good at hovering the CPP but my FF needs a lot of work. I have RF G3.5 and practice on that constantly. I am thinking of trying out the DD tail with the Axe tail motor.
