View Full Version : transporting in a pickup

So far I've only messed around with my helis at my home so I've had no need to take them anywhere. Lately I've been starting to get the itch to travel. I've got a regular cab 8 ft bed pickup. I'm trying to figure out the best way to transport my .30 size heli to and from whatever field I go to.

I can throw it on the front seat. I'd need to lay something down to catch any grime and spooge from the engine. Plus I'd have the tail in my lap. Not the ideal setup.

I could point it nose down in the cab. I'd need to remove the canopy and pray I don't damage the head or the tail from the bouncing around.

I'm seriously considering just setting a piece of plywood in the bed of the pickup and tying the skids down so the heli can't tip over. I don't think it would go anywhere as long as I set it towards the front of the bed.

thoughts? :dontknow

New to the hobby, but had a thought about this. What about one of those Styrofoam coolers, and you can cut out a slot to hold the tail\blade on 1 side, and the blade on the other?

not sure how the nitro mixes with the styro, but you can put some sort of tray in the bottom to catch any drips.......the top might even fit over the cooler when the heli is inside...

Just a thought

To hold it place, I think I have seen people just do the wood board infront of the wheel wells?

I run two helis in my bed. I cut a half sheet of plywood to fit between the wheel wells with the end wide to the bed. That way the plywood can't slip back and forth. I took a couple of 2X4s and screwed them into the plywood and made a pocket on one side for my tool box and on the other side I carry three gallons of nitro. I then put a board on front and one behind the heli landing gear to hold it from sliding back and forth. The last thing was to put bolts through the plywood sticking up on either side of the landing gear. I put a small piece of wood across the landing gear held by wing nuts on the bolts that stick up. Helis can't move, fuel and tool box are secured with bungee's. When I need the bed, I just slip the plywood out, Radio stays in cab with me.

Fishing rod holders from WalMart or sporting goods place, plywood and some screws.
screw the holders to the ply, place the skid runner in the holder and press down...
holds pretty good.

I have a piece of foam rubber backed carpet in the bed of my pickup.
I just lay the heli on its side with the tail rotor facing up. That way it can not fall over and the carpet keeps the heli and anything else from sliding around.

Buy a crew cab truck and use the seatbelts to hold 'em to the back seat. :)
