First, let me say he's a better pilot than I...
However, whomever is "supervising" this needs a safety brief. There was a big discussion a while ago at RCG about a four year old pilot, and most thought the age wasn't an issue. Then again, he was flying 3D at a safe distance. That picture just makes me cringe...

Age is not the issue, but complacency certainly is! I see way too many photos of people standing really close. In this case I reckon even the cars are too close. If anything goes wrong, there is going to be a lot of shrapnel flying everywhere at high speed....

I dont think age or skill is completely relevant here as if something on that heli fails, and you cant properly control it, he is WAY too close!!

THIS IS A FAKE PHOTO ! I was there that day , Pablo's father was really controlling the heli ! He was standing further away but is such a good pilot , he told his only son to stand really close and pretend he was flying , just for the shot ! :arggg:
WHO ON EARTH would let his only son stand a couple of feets away from a RC flying chainsaw??!!

People are hovering upright at the same distance too, I dont see the problem if you can fully control inverted hover.
5 feet away from your 5 year old son... .. ..?
U know what these machines can do?
Imagine a GLITCH while hovering there.

Yes but thats the same with upright hovering.

So it must be OK then because glitches only happen when a heli is inverted. Wow, I didn't know that! I will stand much closer now that I know that I am safe....
Please do not post DANGEROUS information :arggg:
Dont EVER stand that close to ANY of your helis.
If you do, youre tempting fate

Ok let me put it in another way.
If the world top pilots in both FAI and 3D hover that close to themselves, why is it that dangerous? Its the same, if your hover 5 metres away and 10 metres. One glitch can just be as lethal.
EXACTLY!
Sh*t happens, and EVEN if youre a top 3D pilot, helicopters DO glitch, you CAN lose orientation etc.
IMO, if the heli glitches 10 metres away from me, I have a bigger chance of running like h*ll.
I have nothing against top FAI and 3D pilots flying close to themselves, as long as the are willing to take eventual consequences, and as long as they dont fly their helis too near other people.

Is that unsafe also?
Erm. Kinda, yer. Could be.
A nice gust or a glitch could get unlucky if various factors combined threw the heli towards one of the 2 ppl.

O.K. A couple of reasons this IS safe (above photo)
Number 1: I am about 10-15 meters away from the heli.
Number 2: The photo taker is even further away (about 20 meters) and is using the zoom on his camera.
Number 3: There is very VERY little wind.
Number 4: The heli is expertly set up (it is the club heli) and not just setup by a newbie like me.
Number 5: There is a very experienced pilot (most experienced pilot at our field) standing next to me (note the shadow that appears to be under the heli is his shadow).
Number 6: He is flying the helicopter.
All those reasons and I would say this is pretty safe...

If one is married and has responsibility to his family will not argue about how close you can stand in front of a chain saw. The further away the safer, no one can denial that. Remembered how the Australian animal behavior expert died from a sting ray attack, cos he never showed any respect for nature. I never liked the way he handled the snakes and the crocks on TV. The reptiles just don't like to be handled. Please do not promote unsafe practices, T-rex when reacted with mother of nature can kill !

I forgot to tell you a story. I regret my comment years ago about it is safe for some people to drive while talking on the phone. I told a grand mother a work that I could drive better than her while I am on the phone when she tried to warm me of my unsafe driving practice. Pure arrogance, I had a perfect driving record like the way you fly a T-rex. Only a few month ago, I was talking on the phone while making a left turn with a 20 footer I just rented and I came inches away from a collision with another truck. You can never be too safe. Every year goes by in your life, you tend to do things safer and safer. You can always argue it is saftest to stay home but life will be too boring. I am saying, you want to reduce risk as much as you can while having fun.

You can get killed walking your dog!
I personally would not put myself in harms way But there is a thing called confidence what you would find in a guy that you have watched hover his birds inverted every weekend without incidents. So to walk up for a pic and walk away, so what, no big deal.

I have 38 years experience walking and I tripped the other day. Almost busted my ass. I thought I was experienced and could never mess that up.

Though I've seen many accomplished, highly skilled pilot fly even closer than what is seen in the photo, my personal safety point of view is no closer than 60 ft. regardless of altitude, be it ankle high, belly high, chest high or eye level or higher.
Things fail be it Tx, Rx, battery pack, qyro, ball link or whatever...if it's man made, it will fail in time. At 60 ft. minimum, you can at least react to the moment you know you don't have control and can verbally announce that " I don't have any control" so the immediate area can be evacuated in short order. Material damage to cars, pop ups, etc. can be dealt with but when a person recieves physical damage, that's a whole different game, so to speak. :!: :!: :!:
