View Full Version : Forward flight... WTF?

OK, I'm new. I've got the tail in hover nailed cold, the nose in is checked, but still needs work, and the side in... Well, I should have it in a few more days.
Forward coordinated flight with turns... Not even close. I am just not getting it. Yes, I have watched Bob's video. After hovering for a few minutes on the sim, it starts to get boring or frustrating, so to break up the routine, I am trying to take the bird once around the field.
What I want to be once around the field either turns out to be halfway with a crash, or a semi controlled zig-zag covering every axis and using a solid acre of airspace +/- 100', then either followed by a rare recovery, or a wreck. If I was trying to do 3D, this would be cool. :glasses2:
Any tips you can pass on to a newbie to help get this going?

do slow turns first
remember that the heli has a heading hold gyro so you have to add tail input to get the turn.
dont jam the sticks just like hovering
hover for a little ,point the heli where you want it to go.
give a little forward cyclic then give a small tail input.
youll see the heli start to go in a nice soft arch .
continue with the arch nice and easy and you will have a circle.
once you get the feel for that the high speed banked turns will be easier
thats how i did it when i was starting out on the sim
remember nice and slow at first.
and small stick movments just like hovering

Nice and slow... Funny, that thought never crossed my mind. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

may have to lean into the turn a little.
thats ok ...just dont lean to much.
little it of forward...little bit of a lean and bring the tail around.
nice and easy...dont go to fast and youll be flying

I learned FF by first hovering then turning the tail at 45 degrees and moving the heli in one direction (to the left or right)... then stop. Turn the heli 45 degrees the other way, then moving that direction.
Then progressing to what kama1 suggested.
Good luck, hope that helped.

Actually... Now that I am trying s l o w flying, the 45* thing is just kind of a natural progression. The Chuck Yeager stuff was not working. :)
Back to the side ins.... My ultimate undoing.
Thanks guys!

once you get the side ins nailed
forward flight will be easier.
you will know how to deal with the different orientaions .

kama... I learned side-in from progressing through FF the way I did.
I guess everyone learns differently.

well its what ever works for you .
i tried the balls to the walls thing when i first started.
it didnt turn out to good.
so i went back to hovering and learned all my orientations.
i rip up the sky now
