A cyclic ring allows you to maximize your swashplate travel without causing binding in the corners. I don't pretend to understand why it is that you can cause binding in the corners and not at full travel in just one cyclic direction at a time. If you have your setting at max travel, you should check because you are probably binding at the diagonals.

Because a swash plate is round and a stick pot is square. A cyclic ring makes the stick pot round.
