View Full Version : Heading hold Gyro on the CP???

I am thinking about converting my CP over to brushless. I have a telebee heading hold gyro sitting here doing nothing. These gyro's are meant to be used with a servo driven tail rotor, not the electric motor driven tails the CP has. I was wondering if there is a way I can use that style of gyro on the blade?

Yes. I am using a Castle Creations Pixie 7P to drive dual tail motors using a Telebee Gyro. It works pretty good. A little drift that is easily trimmed out. However, I am not using the 4n1, using a Hitec Electron 6 for receiver.

So does the Pixie just plug into the gyro? Then the gyro into channels 5 and 6 on the receiver?

On my setup using a Futaba 7CHP. The Gyro plugs into channels 4-Rudder and 5-gain. The Pixie 3-pin plugs into the Gyro output. The gyro servo signals are the power signals for the speed control. I set the Gyro up following the same procedure as a servo tail rotor. Power is supplied by a T into the battery leads for the Pixie.

I strongly suggest you built some type of lazy suzan to mount the helicopter on while you test everything. Took me a bit to sort out the proper direction. The thing was spinning all over at first. :D

I have to do a double arm of the speed controls when starting off. Down throttle to arm the main moter, then fully left rudder to arm the tail speed control. Its kind of squirrely spooling up in this manner. I also programmed a mix on one of the switches to act as a Throttle Hold for the tail motor.

I am still learning so I can't tell you how well this setup will 3D. But it seems to make the tail a lot less twitchy. It also seems to need less a adjustment after the initial setup. I was constantly adjusting the 4n1 before.

Heres my setup

Blade CP (ie a FrankenBlade)
Futaba 7CHP Transmitter
HDX300 Brushless Motor
Phoenix 25 ESC
Hitex Electron 6 Receiver
Dual Tail Motors (brushed)
Pixie 7P ESC (brushed tail)
Telebee Gyro (Head Lock)

Thanks a lot for that info, SMW. Interesting what you are saying about how you have to arm the two different esc's. I had not considered that before. I was planning on just using my stock CP tx for this project. I do have a Optic 6 tx I can use if I have to.
Thanks again,

I almost forgot, DISABLE the low voltage cutoff in the Pixie speed control. Ask me how I know about that
