Whats the easiest / fastest way to repair a broken CPP boom from a blade strike? I'm using plastic blades on one..they fly super but a hard landing will flex them enough to whack the boom.

Is there a nice quick way to wrap the boom? Replacing it seems like a lot of work..how do you get it out of the frame?

Any ideas welcome. Thanks in advance,

Ray

Usually i unsolder the wires to the tail motor and then break the tail boom as short as possible. Then drill the end out with a 3/16"bit Or you can get that plastic weld in the black tube from walmart But i would just replace it IMO

Here's an idea. Never tried this but I might next time I break a boom. I wonder if a CF tube with 5mm ID would work? That is to say if you left like a half inch or so of the stock boom in the frame and had about the same for the tail, then just slide the new boom over the end of the frame and insert tail piece and attach with screws? Might just work. Might even be stronger too? Looks like I have a little project for tonight!

If it doesn't completely break but just splits/cracks, someone suggested wrapping it in thread then CA gluing the thread wrapped boom. I haven't tried it, but it sounds structurally "sound".

Buzzkill, your's does as well.

Did the 5 min. fix, ran 2mm carbon from end of skids to bracket under the tail motor for boom supports. CA'd broken boom halves as well.....very stiff and flies well. Would attach pic if I knew how. Will clean up later...flying again.

Thanks,

Ray

It's good that you are up flying again. Boom repairs seem to be more work than just replacing with a new one for $3. If you can find CF tubes that size at the lhs you could make several for less than that. A heat gun will release the glue so long as they have not been epoxied or anything.

Ive gone threw quite a few booms, so I went to my local hardwear shop and bought a 3/16th alum tube. At 1.99 for a yard and a half I can make at least 3 booms and they dont break when hit just bend so you get alittle more life out of them. I also noticed that they are lighter and help gain alittle more lift. Another thing that seemed to work is sleeving the boom so that boom stikes dont kill your boom. A believe a 1/4 alum tube fits over the stock boom. Makes the set up alittle heaver tho.

What I did with mine was to put two carbon fiber rods on either side. I wrapped black thread around to hold the rods in place. Kind of like wrapping a fishing pole eye. Then when all threaded, I drissled super glue and let it set. My boom is rock solid. I did it because mine had started to splinter.

to remove the boom, ca debonder, apply lt it soak, twist and repeat.you can also use the small kid size alum arrow, put a little fuel tubing, an inch or so, where the blade strike hits. reinstall boom w/ hot glue

After breaking 4-5 tail booms I grabed a fiberglass whip used for a offroad vehicle flag and made it fit, the wires are zip tied to the boom I have not had 1 issue with the tail boom in many many many flights including some crashes that would have bent alum.,cracked carbonfiber rods, this was one of the best mods yet as far as frame parts go.

Tail boom methods--

1. Acetone will unglue the boom from the frame and tail case. It will not melt either the black plastic or the CF. I know, I tested it on both materials, then dabbed it on with a small piece of paper towel and the boom came right out. Don't get it on the wire insulation though....

2. A split or partial break in the boom can be repaired as follows:

a. Cut a 3/4" to 1.25" section from a soft plastic pen.
b. Cut a slice out of the resulting small cylinder so it can be compressed almost entirely around the boom.
c. Heat the section of pen body and clamp it around the boom while it cools so it's shape matches the boom.
d. CA the splint onto the boom so it extends equally on each side of the break.
e. Cinch a plastic tie onto the splint on each side of the break.
f. Go fly.

I have taken to saving all manner of plastic packaging and small parts for micro helicopter repairs. Saves a lot on parts!

I have removed 2 carbon booms from my blade with heat but the other two I had to cut out. So the heat gun isn't a true test for me since I'm running 50% on removel :arggg: I have also tried aluminum booms and they will bend on a hard landing so carbon is the way to go. I also have carbon rods I bought from a lhs and can make about 3 booms out of one length and been lucky as not to use them yet  When using plastic blades you have to be careful not to dumb thumb your tx or you can get a boomstrike really quick. I had to pullout very fast and smacked the boom so the plastics have there drawbacks. Jimmi :glasses2:
